R is BMW's line of bikes with horizontally opposed, longitudinally mounted two cylinder engines. Back in the day their were some vertically mounted single cylinder R's though.

K series is for the multicylinder inline line of bikes, starting with longitudinally mounted 4 and soon after 3 cylinder engines, inline, laying on their side. Slowly phased out in favor of transverse inline engines of 4 and 6 cylinders between 2005 and 2009.

"K" is the designation for the model series.  For example, "R"=traditional 2-cylinder airhead/oilhead/hexhead models, "K"=newer 3 & 4-cylinder brick models.

"RT" means Reisetourer, "RS" means Reisesport, "LT" mean Luxustourer, "S" means Sport (in German)
