Title: Heated throttle grips
Post by: Solly on September 26, 2015, 12:18:55 PM
Hi All,   Thought I'd ask if anyone knows where I can purchase a heated throttle grip for my 93 k1100LT at a reasonable price and has it in stock? My research shows the PN# to be 61 31 2 315 222. I'm sure there's probably something on this site but unsure where I saw it. Thanks and enjoy the weekend. Also accessory adaptor port plugs {male end}.

I'd bet that they are sold in a kit as a pair. If you don't go stock, many others have gone with Symtec brand.
I've seen kits for them starting at around $45.

I have 10 year old OEM heated grips on one K75 that still work perfectly. I have 2 other K75s with aftermarket heated grips that have never worked AFAIK. On one of them, the right grip gets so hot it's basically useless while the left one doesn't work at all. Granted, I haven't done any troubleshooting on them, but I will probably swap out the aftermarket grips with OEM ones on the bike with the hack -- they're better quality and have good rubber grip covers. They aftermarket ones have some thin foam crap that's falling apart. Bottom line is, I think, you get what you pay for. If anyone else has any feedback on heated grips, I'd like to hear it too because I'll be in the market for them soon myself.

Simple male powerlet plug on ebay here:

Still not exactly cheap, but I used one to make a plug for the battery tender.

Can I run OEM-style  heated grips with a 32A alternator?

I wouldn't know why not. BMW offered the grips with the smaller alternator since the '82 K100.
You will be limited on what else you use with them on at the same time.

Yes, you can.  The issue of too little amperage happens when you run a pair of 55 watt or 85 watt driving lights, heated grips and heated gear.

K1100 factory heated grips show up on flea bay with some regularity.  New sets are still available either a s a set or single heated grip.  check the microfiche at A & S and look for the discount code Johnny has on this site

I'll throw out a tidbit of info to keep in the back of your mind.....  or I'm all wet, but I have read about it.

SOME heated grip element kits come in 2 different wattages, (ie left/high--right/low). Make sure that the lower wattage element is for the right side throttle tube.(less of a heat sink, heat loss) than the left bar tube.

Thanks all. I think after weighing the differences and prices and other things that I'm going to just order the original grips and save the unexpected hassles that I seem to always get with universal aftermarket items. Original drivers grip which is all I really need is 134.00 plus shipping,i know that's a lot compared to some others. but I think the direct fit will be worth it. Thanks Sol
