Title: Electric Fan not switching on....
Post by: welcometoashley on September 06, 2015, 03:21:01 PM
Was out riding today for a solid 6hrs in 90 degree heat on my K11LT. Toward the end of the ride, I got stuck in some hight way traffic and my electric fan turned on for a second, then switched off then I hard some intermittent whizzing noises. Finally, the whizzing stopped completely and my fan didn't turn on anytime afterward. Had to pull over and let my bike cool off. Fortunately I wasn't too far from home so I made it home alright.

Any ideas what to check out first? I'll probably check out the fuses before taking it in to my mechanic.

Any input on what else I should check out is appreciated.

Thanks!

greetings...

the horn and the fan are on the same fuse... so if your horn works your fuse is good...

this is what i would do... on center stand... open up the seat... pull off your side panels... slide the tank back a few inches... reach in there and see if you can easily turn the fan blade... if so... start it up and let it idle till the temp gauge goes red... gotta listen for the fan to come on...

if you hear the fan motor come on and the blade is not turning shut it down... the blade has come off the shaft...

if you hear the fan motor come on and then stop running shut it down... the bearings are likely wasted...

if you hear the fan motor come on and the blade is turning keep it running until the fan motor turns off... this is most likely normal operation...

if the fan moto does not come on... id pull the 2 pin under tank connector and jump 12v to the fan side... if the fan comes on you know the problem is before the fan... if it does not come on you know the problem is the fan...

you can put a meter on the relay side of that 2 pin connector and look for 12v if gauge is in the red... or you can check it a the relay...

dont ride it if the motor is running and the blade is spinning on the radiator fins... that will ruin your day...
