Hello,
Looked at many pics on net of K bikes with large plastic air box gone and K&N style (washable/reusable) filters installed. Is there an advantage to going with this setup as opposed to sticking with stock box and filter? Seems with pod style filter there would be more room to work on engine and better air flow would engine casing. Pod type filters aren't cheap, and have to be maintained, plus can suck in water when riding in rain, etc.. I think the pods look good on K75 engine, from being simple to install, but not sure of down side? Maybe fuel injection has to be re-mapped/adjusted?????

I've had a K&N cone filter on mine since about 1988. The FI compensates (it may not flow much more than the stock filter which is oversized) Never had any problems in rain and it only gets cleaned every couple years. No trail riding. I liked the looks but opens up the top of the engine and allows better airflow through the radiator. No downside, people love to diss K&N but I've put 180K miles on this setup and still running great. CC Products made the original kit (filter, adaptor plate and a support bracket)They show up on ebay or ibmwr.org occasionally,

I have a k&n inside my airbox. The only downside I can think of is that with the cone, you'll pull more hot air off the engine. The original airbox feeds Cool air from in front of the radiator.

With the K75, you've got Jetronic and the Mass Airflow Sensor to deal with. You can't get rid of the MAS so you end up having to find a place to mount it and a creative means to pipe air to the TB.s (if you envision getting rid of the airplenum). The single pod filter hangs off the MAS and probably sticks out the right side of the engine like a fluffy pimple. K1100's with Motronic are much more adaptable to a pod filter system; check out the Bell Kaff (http://www.pipeburn.com/home/2014/09/29/bmw-k-series-bell-kaff.html).

I think you would loose some power sucking in the hot air from behind the radiator instead of the cooling air through the snorkel on the standard setup. But others have said there is no difference, It is a cosmetic change, if you like the looks, go for it.
