Hey gang,
The original engine guards are pretty steep in cost these days, so I'm looking into fabricating a bash plate and some crash bars.
Could anyone take some photos of acceptable mounting points? I'm having trouble figuring out from the fiche where is safe and where isn't.
I've got the shorty naked bike with the bucket headlight, not an RT or S..

My RTP crash bars connect to the engine mounts and the four unused threaded holes around the base of the oil pan.
I like the RTP crash bar design because it wraps around the engine. It's not just connected on the left and right sides separately. When fully assembled it's a single structurally strong piece.

Ah! Much appreciated. Did you support the motor with a jack or something when installing on those mount points?

I don't think so. Just did one at a time. As I recall it was tough getting one of the screws to line up (front-left, i think).
FWIW - BMW suggests tightening all the frame screws on the right side of the engine and gearbox before the left side to assure proper engine and gearbox alignment in the frame.

if they're rigidly mounted you might save a valve cover at the expense of breaking a chunk off your engine case. i'm honestly not sure which is worse as i'm pretty new to The Brick universe but at ~$30 each from Max Bmw for new ones it's something to consider.

I think I'm most partial towards the solution that keeps the bike off me if we go unexpectedly sideways. How do those rubber bumpers hold out?

Having only gone for a slide once, not on my bmw, I would have to say that any crash bar set up is more to protect the bike than the rider as the rider goes skipping across the pavement/ditch on their own trajectory that isn't the same as the bikes. I see crash bars as just really fancy frame sliders.

I'm not worried about the cost as much as finding them. Did you find the original engine guards somewhere? I'll pull a bike apart from top to bottom, but I just don't weld, so fabricating my own is pretty much out. 1985 K100 RT - the thigh roaster - I mainly want the bars to put highway pegs on to. And to protect from the tip overs - once already, but I was lucky, just scrapes.

Max BMW has the OEM kit in black, for my naked bike at least. I think the RT model has a different version, you'd have to check.

Anybody know the diameter and pitch of those bolts coming out of the rubber mounting hardware?
