Title: No start after spark plugs?
Post by: darthbane71 on August 05, 2015, 09:55:42 AM
I went to change the plugs on the K75 I just picked up, and found out in addition to being old they were slightly fouled. Also, they were about .9mm, so pretty far out of the manual's stated limit of .8mm. I replaced the plugs and put the plug wires back on, went to start the bike and nothing. So then we put the old plugs back in......still nothing. Now there is no condition we can get it to start, old plugs, new plugs, nothing......

Also, when we have the choke on (1/2 choke or full choke) or the throttle opened, after a few revolutions the starter (I think, it's hard to tell but I think that's where it's coming from, will make a loud metallic clunking noise. This is only when the choke is on or the throttle is twisted.

Any ideas? The motor has compression, fuel, and spark so I'm kind of at a loss for why it's acting the way it is.

Did you put the wires on in the proper order?  Plug #1 connects to coil #1. Same with #2 and #3.

Yes, I double checked the coils

Dumb question, but are the ignition coils firmly attached to the spark plugs? They snap on.

Which plugs are you using?

Yes they are firmly attached. Using NGK D7EA.

Even tried switching back to the old plugs and nothing changes

New development. Left the plugs out all night and cleaned the injectors and now she sputters and coughs but when it gets close to running (with the choke on or the throttle open) it makes the loud clacking noise from the area of the starter and then dies.

Record the starting sounds and upload to youtube.

Have you tried cranking it with the plugs out?  It almost sounds like it's hydro-locking a bit, like there's fuel flooding in the cylinders.

This is what it is doing, hard to hear exactly what it's doing but every time the choke is on or the throttle is open it makes a loud metallic clack

That sounds weird. Like the throttle body butterflies are snapping closed.

Sounds like f'd ignition timing.

Sounds like f'd ignition timing.

Yeah - Take your T-shaped HES cover off on the front of the engine and see if your HES looks like this:

Not much has been done to it to my knowledge. I didnt' ride it as the brakes needed work. However, It did run before we changed plugs.

I'll take a look at the timing today

Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but. On my 94K1100lt the plug leads are designed for the bulb type tip connection.  The NGK plugs are screw top, and they don't come with the handy screw on tip(bulb).  Bosch for my bike are bulb type connection??? just a thought.  The guy at NAPA was nice enough to rustle me up some screw on tips(bulb).  And the connectors don't just snap on. It takes a good bit of force to seat em.
