Is is ok to use a painted oil filter like a Bosch? Someone told me the paint would flake off and clog misc. passages?
-
Paint is OK. Paper labels not.

I use AC Delco PF53 filters (changed it today actually) and yeah, paint is fine. I remove stickers and their residue though

Fram used to have a filter that fit the K-bikes but they started putting grippy black stuff on it. That flacks off for sure. Paint is fine. I've been using the AC-Delco pf-53 for many years and never had an issue, but do remove the sticker.

BMW's filters are painted too, if that helps.

not sure about that... the BMW filters I've seen sort of a grey finish that looks almost anodized
-
Could be, I didn't actually look at them closely when I did the oil change this morning, but at a glance, it looked painted to me.
Either way, the Bosch filters are known to many to work well. The Bosch filters have become a little rare around here, however, so I've been buying OEM instead.

Here's where I've been getting mine. They do carry the unpainted Mahle filter, though it's twice as expensive.
