Title: ABS on a K100LT
Post by: TC on May 12, 2015, 02:11:41 PM
I have seen an ad for a 1990 K100LT at a dealer that I am interested in, and have spoken to the dealer who tells me both ABS units on the bike are not working and replacements from BMW are approx. £1600 each. This would put me off buying the bike if it was the only option. Does anyone know if ABS units on these bikes can be repaired? And would non functioning ABS be an MOT failure in the UK? (This would be my first K bike - I've had boxers before but have decided I want a K.)

http://www.motuk.co.uk/mcmanual_310.htm is AFAIK up to date & states ABS fault an advisory matter not a failure: "The vehicle presenter must be advised of any defects found on an ABS system." Personally if I bought the bike I would have the diagnosis checked: have heard of many ABS faults but both modulators faulty at the same time is unusual.

Also note that the early ABS1 controllers are repairable now, if there is a problem with the control computer and not the modulators themselves.

Thanks for the welcome and the information. I think I'll have a look at the bike on Saturday. It can't hurt to look at it. looking forward to being a Motobricker soon.

I bought the K100LT. Straight away put it into a bike shop called Mototechniks in Stowmarket in Suffolk near where I live. They worked out that the ABS fault was that both modulators were knackered. They got some second hand ones pretty cheap and fitted them and they reckon its fixed. I got it back today, and guess what I am going to do early tomorrow?
