Title: Final Drine bearings

  Just passed MOT for my 1986 K75 s 36850 miles.  last year I didnt even look at it and it passed with an advisory on rear wheel bearings, they seem fine to me so I ignored it. This year it failed on rear shock, fork oil seal and a sticky throttle.  I changed the shock, new oil seal and stantion, freed up the throttle.  Good news  passed the re test but as I was leaving the mechanic says " a lot of play at the back wheel have a look when you get back", basically he had missed it and would have failed it again if he could.  Gets home and yes there is some play at the back wheel and grease leaking out from somewhere.  Haynes manual says i am not up to changing the bearings but I think Ill have a try unless somebody tells me other wise.  So has anybody changed theses bearings.

I hate it when Haynes manuals don't give any info and say not to do something...what good is such a service manual...?

They are less than helpful on this issue, I note that the bearings are easily available, there must be some hidden catch.  May just change the drive unit as it also gives me the chance of upping the gearing a bit.  With 32/10 just now red line is around 110, I always want to change up when in 5 th gear a 32/11 may be just the ticket.

  Just done a quick strip down to try and identify the problem, especially where is this grease coming from.  Remove the back wheel then the exhaust as i was struggling with the two screws that hold the disc on.  No grease coming out of drive unit, dont even think there is any in there.  There was oil seeping from the drive shaft to drive unit joint and when wobbled I could see the drive was loose on the shaft housing.  Managed to greatly tighten all four bolts.  Wheel is now back on and there dosent seem to be any play.  Looks like a result .
