Title: New K Bike Owner K100 RS
Post by: NewBrick on March 27, 2015, 11:27:34 PM
Hello fellow Brickers,

I recently picked up a 89 K100 RS and have been having a blast on it.  About a week ago I hesitated on a downshift from 2nd to 1st (GRIND!) and every since then it seems that my up shifts into second seem a little notchy and or clunky but not all the time.

While this is not my first K ( I had a 87 K100 LT that I could not stand ) so I have had a few issue with grinding between 1st and 2nd (BMWs seems very particular on the transition between 1-2 and 2-1) but this is the first time the shifting seem different after a grind.

I was hoping that with the collective wisdom on this board some one could let me know what the score is (like did I really screw something up or its no big deal)

Thanks for looking!

Greeting, fellow South Sounder.

My up-shifts from 1 to 2 have always required extra effort and, most times, two foot actions instead of one. Been that way since I got the K75 50k miles ago. "Ka-clunk" instead of just "clunk" like the rest of the gears.

what timtyler said... also you can drain your gearbox and fill it with mobil 1 75w-140 synthetic gear oil (http://www.amazon.com/Mobil-102490-75W-140-Synthetic-Gear/dp/B009IF3KFK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1427515910&sr=8-1&keywords=mobil+1+75w-140) with guard dog gd-421 moly treatment for synthetic gear oils (http://guarddogmoly.com/product/gd-421-moly-treatment-for-synthetic-gear-oils/)...

Doing the splines on the transmission input shaft helps a lot as well.

Preload the shift lever with some pressure before the shift.  Airhead riders doing that since the dawn of time.  Was taught that by my neighbor back in the 1970's

Yup, I always give 1st-2nd a little more effort than the rest
