Title: ran out of gas. refilled and sputtered to a stop
Post by: arkman84 on March 07, 2015, 11:01:13 PM
85 k100. Left the house and the fuel light was on. Was a few blocks from the station and it spit and sputtered to a stop. Tried to start it a few times to get that short ways and wouldn't so I pushed it to the station and filled up. It started right up and ran perfect for about a mile and sputtered to a stop again and wouldn't start back up. When I start it it cranks but just won't turn over. Is it possible I got air in the fuel line. I left the ignition on while pushing it so the pump probably sucked up a lot of air.

I doubt that is the issue, sucked the junk and water on the screen and fuel filter.  With the pressure of that pump no air is going to exist in the line.

So change the fuel filter?

Could also be a idea to check the fuel strainer under the pump. You find two white plastic tabs at each
side of the pump......press these towards the pump (take care, 30 year old plastic is brittle) and lift the
pump straght up.

Does the fuel pump run ~1,5 sec. after you have released the starter button?

The terrible gasoline that now exists will have damaged the lines in the tank, the rubber support the pump sits in and the pump screen.  Also the power and ground wires insulation.  You may have to rebuild it all, and if pump is no longer running it also.  If rebuilding. Clean the tank.

Yes you can hear the fuel pump run after I try to start it. The fuel pump and tk was rebuilt a few years ago though.

Well every minute is a new experience.  Pull pump, check screen and filter.  You may have to pull lines to manifold and clean the system.

Changing the filter and checking screen and pump is pretty straight forward. What's the best tips to draining the tank. It's full. Or do I absolutely have to?

5 gallon can and a fluid pump from harbor freight, northern tool or Walmart.  Or suck and siphon but with the stuff in gasoline these days I don't recommend it.

Wouldn't ethanol make gasoline less toxic, not more?  (still very toxic, just wondering)

It is the other additives being added these days that are nasty!

You should all stop drinking gasoline and switch to beer....preferably craft beer!!

ok changed the fuel filter. all the hoses were good and strong. cleaned out any debris that was in the tank. I didnt have a long enough extension to get the fuel pump of to clean the screen though. it started right up but ran a little rough like it was missing or something. it ran for about 2 minutes then died. while it was started there was a small zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz type noise from the tank like the fuel pump was under strain or something. then again might be something i am just now noticing cause im listening for it. now when i try to start it the fuel pump kicks on but the bike wont turn over. any ideas? spark plugs being fouled by the debris? the screen on the pump is just that clogged or the pump itself is bad? etc.

Clarify please. You thumb the button and the starter fails to engage?

No. The starter engages and and tries to start but won't. And the zzzzz sound is coming from the tank

Engages....ok got it. Wanted to make sure you wasn't describing a starter problem  :bmwsmile

Pulled the fuel hose from the tank to the rail and engaged the starter to get the pump going and the fuel just trickles out. And the pump only engages every third or fourth try

So start trouble shooting backwards.  Fuel hose to pressure regulator, pressure regulator, hose to tank, hose in tank to fuel filter, fuel filter, hose to pump, pump, screen.  Got to be one or all of the.  Easy peasy.

Pull the hose from the fuel pump to the filter off of the filter and and see if you get fuel when the pump runs.

Yep the first logical place to start, and if good work your way to the fuel manifold.
