Title: Odometer repair

Found a company in Texas named

Overseas Speedometer..

If you're not afraid to get in there and take things apart, you can buy a replacement from MAXBMW for about $110.

I found that my speedometer usually would work intermittently after I removed the FD to lube the pinon splines. The speedo/odometer would quit for a while, then work, then quit for a while. I put a very small dab of bulb grease on the two pins of the speedo wire connector under the right-side battery cover. The speedo immediately started working again and I've never had that problem since.

It's good maintenance to do anyway, and it helps the pins to make a good connection (since the speedo uses wiring instead of a cable).

They prevent corrosion. The contacts press through the grease, and make contact with each other. The silicone prevents corrosion from forming in those spots.

Post by: wmax351 on February 17, 2015, 03:42:53 PM: The best procedure for electrical connections is a shot of WD-40 or PB-blaster to remove corrosion, followed by dielectric grease. Worth doing to all connections on your brick as preventative maintenance.

Post by: Bokobob on March 14, 2015, 01:13:53 PM: Got the unit back and it cost $200 plus two way freight of total of $75....Well pleased with how it works now....have not compared speedo calibration vs gps as I don't ahve that setup.
Oh yes, and I did use Overseas Speedometer in Austin TX to do the work..very satisfied...
