Title: muck on oil filter cap
Post by: cosmouser on October 31, 2014, 12:23:29 PM
I changed my oil about 300 or so miles ago and haven't had any leaks or noticed any drips. Yesterday, though, I found this mucky buildup on the oil filter cap. I feel like if it was a leak it would be dripping and not just hanging out all over.. what do you guys think is going on?

I have a similar issue. I just reckoned it was a little weep of oil that got splashed with road dirt so stuck around rather than drip away. I'm not sure that's its a big issue as long as you keep an eye on the oil sight glass.

 Oil weep.

Did you replace or reuse the O ring on the oil pan cover?

Not a huge issue, just messy.

I wiped it clean as I could then put it back on.

Check the O-ring for a flat edge.  If so  it's time to replace it.  Little bit of grime is nothing to worry about.

Yeah, might be time to replace that O ring.  You only get so many cycles of use. Takes the smallest amount of grit or grime to make it weep oil.

I know, been there, done that.

Check the weep hole on the water/oil pump. If there is oil coming out of it you oil side seal is dead and has been letting oil into the airgap between the oil side and the water side seal. The seal replacement is an easy job. Watch the videos on youtube.

+1

I think it then 'flies' back in airflow, at least thats what mine looks like.  Until it drips onto floor etc. I am not going to fix...wipe off and go fast.
