Title: Custom K75 Rear-End for Touring

I like long distance touring on my K75.

My bike was once an RT, and the full fairing provided lots of comfort and some storage, but I actually enjoy the ride more without all the fiberglass, and I like the quick access to the throttle bodies, cable routing, tank removal, etc. So about 30k miles ago I removed the fairing. I also found the OEM side cases cumbersome and limited in strength and capacity so I replaced the rear rack and tragkorbs. (http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=3775) The top loading cases I used do not offer more capacity but they do allow me to easily and securly attach things to their exterior, like tool tubes, extra fuel, and even dry bags strapped to the tops.

On a recent cross-country, cold weather trip I found that storage was maxed out quickly even though I travel fairly light. I used a medium sized dry bag (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AC6YSD2/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00AC6YSD2&linkCode=as2&tag=cinematographyco&linkId=RXDR6KZP7ZGFHFRW) designed for motorcycles that was strapped to the passenger seat and it worked out perfectly. I kept all my valuable stuff and overnight things in the dry bag and that's all I needed to offload at motels.

I also have a small Pelican case mounted to the top rear rack to keep cameras, USB charging, etc. This has worked out really well. The case even provides a level surface for snacking at rest stops.

Now I want a larger dry bag and maybe larger tragkorbs so that I don't need to attach dry bags (usually camping stuff) to the tragkorbs. I'm considering completely removing the rear-end body work, the pillion half of the seat, and the rear lighting and replacing it with a flat platform attached directly to the frame on which to mount the larger dry bag and maybe a Pelican case for cameras. This configuration would ideally not protrude off the rear as much as the current config. I'd need to replace the brake light and turn signals, but that be an improvement too since the stock rear lighting isn't anything special.

Anyway... this might be my winter bike project.

I hope you continue to update and report how it's working for you. I'd like to do similar things to my k75s.

The only time I need more storage is when travelling from cold to warm places. Then I need a place to stow the bulky winter riding gear.

Looks like a great project. I've definitely lamented the limited weight capacity of the sidecases and lack of tiedowns. It would be nice to make a setup with a swappable pillion seat, so you could switch between the ability to carry a passenger and the ability to carry a bunch of stuff.
