Title: oops I,ve bent it
Post by: gazman on October 12, 2014, 07:35:19 PM
greetings brickheads, I,ve just bought a 94 k1100lt that had low speed impact 25klms for a parts bike but she seems to good to waste, Question is will the front end (triple tree, forks, wheel) off a late 80,s k100 bolt on. as I,ve found one that is being parted out. New parts are way overpriced and k1100 wrecks are scarce especially ones without front damage. Thanks in advance

I'm going to counter Johnny's assessment with "I think that you could fit the K100 front end to the K1100".

A very popular mod to the K75/K100 is to upgrade the suspension components with parts from later K's.  So, why shouldn't it be possible to go in the opposite direction?  The stanchion diameters are different between K100 and K1100, as is the distance between the stanchions.  The brake caliper mounts are slightly different as well.  However, if you were to swap in the entire front end of the K100, it would be a bolt-on process.  The length of the pivot shaft and diameter of the steering head bearings are the same on K75/K100/K1100.  The forks would mechanically fit.  You'd have to find a place for the ignition switch and fork locking mechanism because it differs greatly between the two bikes.

Another issue may be front brakes.  The K1100 are ABS and possibly the K100 being parted is not ABS.  I'm not sure if the calipers would be compatible with the K1100 ABS, or if the ABS ring & sensor would be able to be retrofitted.  This is something you'll need to check carefully.

People do that because the later K's have a better front suspension. Why downgrade? I'm sure you could find a K1100 getting parted out.

Because the OP is in Australia, not the US.  Canada and Australia for example are not ripe in variety of salvage parts, and don't have the choice given to buyers as in the USA.  Many time, we're forced to make compromises.
