Title: RAM mounts and appropriate locations?
Post by: branandfox on September 14, 2014, 07:33:54 PM
Does anyone use a RAM mount for a phone or GPS unit? I want to install one on my K Bike but kind of at a loss as to which mount to buy and where to mount it. Anybody use these and can suggest a good mounting place?

Yep... I use the phone mount shown here (http://www.rammount.com/Products/CellPhoneMounts/tabid/142/Default.aspx#/). It's called X-Grip.
Use their diamond shaped base and a 6 inch arm. base is mounted to the inner fairing

How did you mount it to the inner fairing? I imagine that you could mount it to the knee pad with some bolts and locking nuts. How did you set yours? also what is the size of the factory holes for the handlebar mounted mirrors. is it 9mm? I think they make a mount that could sit in that spot. Just trying to work on different mounting options.

Same way you're talking about mounting to the knee pads....

I use a RAM mount that I adapted from a mirror stem mount for my last bike. I drilled a hole in the fascia of the K bike and bolted the ram mount to the fascia and then mounted the phone to it. There's a washer and lock nut holding the post in place.

I've tried a few times to post a picture of my mount but it won't let me.

I mounted a GPS to the dashboard.  Looks like this:

I guess I will have to find a Mount that will mount to my dashpad. I have the RS dashpad on the bike so I will have to find something small to mount it for my phone.

I epoxied one of these RAM mounts to the back side of the instrument cluster about 15k miles ago. After some trial and error I found that the only good place for me to view my GPS while riding is center and high. I don't like looking down too far or to the side.

I have a Spot device mounted on a RAM Handlebar Clamp (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005J43I56/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005J43I56&linkCode=as2&tag=cinematographyco&linkId=EA5NWAIFRPQVTY5R) too. I don't have a rubber dashpad though like most K's.

Just got a 2nd one of those yesterday and the aforementioned X-Grip (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0055PH0XA/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0055PH0XA&linkCode=as2&tag=cinematographyco&linkId=WNBLQ5KJHWCCXUAL) to mount my cell phone.

so the handlebar ram mount shown above fits timtyler? as I look for ram mounts I am finding a lack of GPS using a 1"ball mount as well. I want a gps for long rides but I might just stick to my phone with earbuds in! my problem with mounting is I don't have much room on the RS style nose to mount. I don't want to limit my turning in any direction and I want to be able to see the GPS or phone unit easily.

There's a specific ram mount application for the k1100 using the redundant left hand mirror thread. Works really well
