What's the consensus for using plastic zip ties instead of Oetiker clamps (#3, #5) on the rubber bushings (#4) that connect to the top of the throttle bodies?

I guess it depends on how tight you can get them!
Sometimes access makes it difficult to pull them up to the max, otherwise I'd say no problems.
You only need to pinch up the sleeve to make it airtight after all....I'd try it then spray 'easy start' ether engine starter or suchlike, to identify leaks: Spray onto the throttles with the engine running, it will rev up if its drawing air/starter spray thru the ties :2thumbup:
Another test is to drip light oil onto the joints, with engine running, it will be sucked into the engine if leaking

I would be worried about heat degradation with age also. Use a very good quality if you do this.

I used stainless steel zip-ties found at harbor freight...its tough to get them tight but possible with needle nose pliers, or rounded wire cutter type and a screwdriver to push in the opposite direction...the real throttle body 'seal' to me looks like the raised ridge inside the bushing, between the two metal parts.

I have the stainless HF zip ties and no matter how tight I get them, they always back-off/loosen a tiny bit when I let go. Wacky design.
I just ordered the OEM clamps. Zip ties will live on the bike for a week.

The problem with the worm gear clamps are,
1: not as narrow as the original oem clamps.
2: placement of the worm gear so as not to interfere with butterfly rotation(not impossible, but you have to be paying attention when installing).

McMaster-Carr sells a clamp that fits perfectly. Somewhere in here there's a thread (might be by me) that has the part number. Better than Oetikers because no special tool needed. I wouldn't trust zip ties, and if I ever had to remove the zip ties I'd worry about damaging other parts.

The zip ties seemed to cinch the rubber tight enough that the bushings wouldn't spin but I figured I might as well use the recommended clamps to be sure.
I messed up the lower clamp on cylinder #3's bushing. It's still pretty tight, but not immovably tight like the rest. I'll replace that with a worm drive clamp eventually.

I bought similar from Grainger and other then being a bit long they were fine width wise.

The Grainger clamp is the better of the two as it has a stainless screw instead of McMaster-Carr's zinc plated screw.

Of note to Canadian riders, I tried to find the IDEAL brand of clamp here through the Cdn affiliate; Acklands Grainger and for whatever reason they don't carry the IDEAL brand but instead carry Tridon and that same clamp is only available in 1/2" width not 5/16. Maybe someone can correct me but that's what I was told by the Ack/Grainger guy.

Suzuki band clamps work well. Part 09402-48208 for TB->bushings and bushings->air plenum on K1100s.

These would fit the bill.

I went to a local BMW car shop and asked about hose clamps. They brought me into the back and let me poke through their parts bins until i found some that fit. Worm style-- but all the threading is on the outside of the band, so nothing but smooth metal contact for the bushings. Easy to install and reusable.

Fit nice and tight, used them on my XS650 exhaust wrap....wouldn't like to get them off again :mbird

Sorry to jack this thread but what are your thoughts on nylon zip ties for clutch rod boot? Number 5 in the diagram.

Back to throttle body bushings. Here in Alberta (and BC and SK) I went to Gregg Distributors http://www.greggdistributors.ca/branches.htm (http://www.greggdistributors.ca/branches.htm)
looking for these clamps. Found some worm gear, narrow band (8mm) that should do the trick. Part number PMH-24, in fact any clamp there using the PMH prefix is the narrow width, variety of sizes.

The clutch boot clip 23131241872 is readily available as genuine part, cost £1.70 here, just buy the BMW part
The throttle body clamp is also available 11611460900 £1.55 each, prices are from Motorworks here in North West England, they do ship worldwide
This clamp fits top and very bottom of the inlet 'stack' , the centre one is 11611460940 these are £2.28 each
Both parts fit all models of K's btw :2thumbup:

They are the type that you crimp tight with a special tool, or use 'pincers' that we use to pull nails out as well!
