Title: 94 K1100LT losing power between 2500 - 3500 RPM
Post by: spareparts63 on August 10, 2014, 09:06:35 AM
Hi All,

Glad to be on board.

Last week I changed to E3 spark plugs. Bike ran fine for a few hundred km's, then started sputtering/losing power between 2500 and 3500 RPM. Over 4000 works fine, starts and idles OK.

Any ideas out there?

Every run problem I have had on my 95 has been related to bad connections on the ECM from the dielectric grease drying out and vacuum leaks. I'd check the throttle body bushings for leaks.

Thanks Grim.

I unplugged the ECM, contacts are still well greased, but it seemed to work fine on a 5 K test run after plugging it back in. Took the plugs out and checked them. One was a bit loose when I removed it. Throttle body rubber looks good. Taking her out for a 30 K drive...wish me luck!

Are you greasing the electrical contacts on the ECM?

Dielectric grease is not conductive.

Yes, I used dielectric grease.
Everything worked great for a week, then Sunday it started again driving in town. I noticed the temp guage was quite high, but no lights on. Checked antifreeze and it was a little below minimum. Topped that up. trying another drive today.

I would spray electrical contact cleaner into the ECM connectors, let it dry, and see if that helps.

Thanks Tim, I will try that next.

I started her up this morning, and same trouble. Changed the E3 spark plugs back to NGK (this trouble started right after installing E3 plugs), works fine on a 5K drive. Taking a longer test drive (and picking up a can of contact cleaner.)
