hello! i am new to this forum "greetings all"
i have recently purchased my first bmw , it is a 1993 k75 rt bought as a non runner , owned by the previous owner for 9 years.
He used it to get to work all year and served him well, however with this very wet winter we had the bike developed an electrical fault.
i have spent many hours now with my multimeter and wiring diagrams and the internet going through the loom,so.. when i turn the key the oil and alternator lights come on, the digital gear indicator is on zero, the green neutral light does not come on (i have checked the bulb which is ok)i cant find the stand switch i think it has been removed (i dont no what the switch looks like but i have had a good look and i cant see anything that resembles a switch , i have put a new starter relay on as the bike came with many spares , the starter relay clicks when i turn on or something clicks in the relay box,i have continuity on the wire from the starter button to the relay thats ok , there is power going from the battery to the relay but there is no power coming out of the relay to the starter motor , also when i turn on i cant here the fuel pump . the head light bulb is not fitted dont no if that will effect anything but i thought i would mention it.
ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED AS IM ITCHING TO RIDE IT!!!!!

Check the kill switch
-
thanks , i have had the kill switch apart it all looks ok when i switch it off the ignition lights go out is this normal??
-
, the digital gear indicator is on zero, the green neutral light does not come on
This is probably due to a broken transistor on the GPI PCB, try to pull the clutch lever instead.
i cant find the stand switch i think it has been removed
Jetronic equipped models ain't got a sidestand switch.
or something clicks in the relay box,
You hear the LSR clicks.
also when i turn on i cant here the fuel pump
The fuel pump starts when you push the starter button....and runs ~1,5 sec. after you have released the starter button.
-
thanks inge k>>
just tried it with the clutch in still nothing , its the SR that clicks when i turn on, what is gpi pcb
thanks for response .
-
also i have followed a trouble shooting chart and i ended up at bad tgip switch , can anyone tell me what this is and were to find it .
-
just tried it with the clutch in still nothing ,
Could be that you also got a bad clutch switch.....remove the tank, in the left front corner you find a small
two pole connector...two yellow wires at the switch side, a black/green and green/black wire at the harness side.
You should have power on the green/black wire when the ignition is on, and power on the black green wire
when also the clutch lever is pulled.......if OK next step would be to check the RHS switch assy connector.
its the SR that clicks when i turn on,
If you with "turn on" mean to turn on the ignition switch, the only relay coil which should get power is the LSR
(load shedding relay)
what is gpi pcb
gear position indicator / printed circuit board.
-
also i have followed a trouble shooting chart and i ended up at bad tgip switch , can anyone tell me what this is and were to find it .
Do you mean gear position indicator switch?
-
great help> i have power on the green/black no power on the black/green when the clutch is pulled
-
gpis> gear position indicator switch, that must be it thanks , i wonder if it is this or the clutch switch or all of them , hoi ho ho
-
great help> i have power on the green/black no power on the black/green when the clutch is pulled
You could try to remove the clutch lever, spray around the switch plunger with WD40 or similar, exercise the plunger by moving it in/out several times......repeat with more WD40 if needed....
If that doesn't help, you need a new switch.......as the switch is useless, emergency metod: cut the wires close to the switch and short them..and isolate the wires, so you don't blow the fuse at every corner.
-
cutting the wires and joining them was what i was just thinking , but i will clean the switch first , fingers crossed!!
-
gpis> gear position indicator switch, that must be it thanks , i wonder if it is this or the clutch switch or all of them , hoi ho ho
Earlier in this thread you did mention that the GPI did show 0 when in neutral, if it also shows all gears 1-5 as normal..........it's nothing wrong with your GPI switch.
-
ok>> i have bypassed the clutch switch and i have power to the starter button , when i press the starter button the fuel pump makes a hum engine still will not turn, i have taken a reading at the starter motor side of the starter relay and there is nothing it is a new relay, the gears show 1...5
-
Does the relay click when you push the starter button?
If not, disconnect the signal wire connector and check if you got power at the black/yellow wire and ground
at the brown/red wire....when pushing the starter button.
-
yes i have power on the black /yellow and the brown and red is to ground there is no sound from the starter relay but the two small relays in the middle of the box in a cluster of 4 click.
thanks for your time inge k
-
Seems like you need a new starter relay, but it should be only the left front relay of the four that should click.
Which is the other one?
-
yes i think that is were we are at now,, i tried the old relay with the same results ..
thank you very very much for your help INGE K for guiding me through this problem.
have a good weekend > watch this space for the result <
-
just had another play and found that of the 4 small relays the one that is clicking is the rear right
-
i tried the old relay with the same results ..
??...Two bad starter relays ....seems a bit strange...but not impossible.
Maybe you should try to connect the coil directly to the battery...or a external battery.
How did you test the ground signal to the relay.
-

The rear right is the horn relay......I'll would guess it have been done some work in your relay box.
The relay that should close the contacts when pushing the starter button is the fuel pump/FI relay.
And when the starter relay functions as normal, the LSR should open the contacts.
Normally this relays is the two frontmost of the four.
-
hi just seen your post ,
i tested the ground with the positive of the multimeter on the positive of the battery and the ground of the multimeter on the brown and red wire
-
an update to my problem.
i have read that the load shed relay cuts out all the lights and just sends power to the starter and essentials when you push the start button, i just tried pushing the start button with the lights on and the lights stayed on would this effect the starting of the bike.
any help much needed!!!
-
also does anyone know how i can test the start relay
-
Your LSR won't function since it isn't any output from the starter relay, see post 20.
(The LSR coil is grounded through the starter brushes).
About testing the relay, see post 19.
-

Your description of what the load shed relay does is not exactly correct. The load shed relay does cut the power to non-essentials such as the lights. It does this so that the limited power of the battery is available completely for the starter, ignition, and fuel injection. But it does not SEND power to the starter. The power to the starter is sent by the starter relay.
-
thanks for your help INGE K.
i now have a k 75 that runs!!! i tested the start relay and it was fine, i then tested the ground for the relay again and it was faulty then made a new ground as could not trace the earth wire, and "hay presto " it fired up.
now gonna give it a full service and put some miles on the clock.
p.s great site
-
This is why I in a earlier post asked how you did test the ground connection, not an unusal problem this.
The problem is in the ignition ECU (or its connections).....the ignition ECU grounds the coil on both the
starter relay and the FI relay.
If you now push the starter button when the engine is running the starter will engage, when the relay is
grounded via the ignition ECU that won't happen.
-
bike now working fine . bad earth to relay, just need to put some miles on the clock now!!!
-
wow i do intend to understand the technical dater in your last message as i am new to these bikes my brain is full at the mo . i did try to follow the ground wire but the wire won, so took a risk and grounded the relay , so i will have to avoid the start button when riding ,
DID YOU INVENT THE K SEIRIES
