Hi Johnny,
I'm thinking of heading out there if I may.  Not certain but have high school buddy flying helicopters in Couer d'Alene I've wanted to get out to see for several years.  This looks like a good fit.
Certainly split cost on a room--if someone can put up with alleged snoring.
Plotting now, will take a few days to confirm...

Earplugs are mandatory.

Also, if anyone is not familiar with the lay of the land, Lewiston ID altitude is about 700 feet above sea level. It can be warm. Stanley is at 6200, could snow. Just sayin'. ;D

Hey FD....did you think any more about getting up at the crack of dawn to roll with me ??  :o

I don't understand why you think you have to leave at 5:30.  Google Maps tells me it's about 5 1/2 hours to get from Seattle to Clarkston.  I'd say leaving here at 8:00am would give you plenty of time to make it there by 2pm to get yer tire swapped.

Can an R bike do more than 45 mph?

I've done Lolo Pass and back as a day ride from my house.

if it were me... i would roll at 1st light... can burn up 5:30am tp 8am at home a few thousand days over lifetime... but would much rather burn up 2.5 extra hours of daylight rolling the rattlesnake or the spiral highway...

Maybe the roll-out time is a bit extreme but I figured that (me anyway) at least one meal will be consumed along the way, and I've never ridden that road so there may be a little dawdling and gawking involved....

I was kinda thinking that we'd meet somewhere convenient for both of us, grab a cup o' joe and nibble on something, then head east  ;)

We'll figure out a meet time next week.

I haven't been there in a while so I'd have to check my GPS tracks but I think this is how I usually go - the last part is the Old Spiral Highway.  Johnny's a wuss if he doesn't like going down it.  Great views too.

That could be doable.....or there was some little greasy spoon on I-90 near the pass on the news the other night where everyone pulled off because the returning Memorial Day traffic was so bad...I'll see if I can find the name.
I'll bust out my DH-WA book and see if there some other options along the way.... ;)

runnin' loose and bored in the parts department with a credjit card in my pocket is NOT a good thing - unless they have a really cool map of Idertucky.. ::)

Just my experience and kind of a tangent but I've never needed an appointment to get a tire swapped.  I've found that if you're willing to take off your own wheel and you're traveling that most shops will find a way to squeeze you in.  Usually I'm out within a hour after I ride up out of the blue.

I've done it in:

Bangor, Maine - Yamaha dealer
Butte, Montana - Harley and other brands shop
Salt Lake City - Generic shop
Sna Rafeal, CA - Ducati shop

Just my experience and kind of a tangent but I've never needed an appointment to get a tire swapped.  I've found that if you're willing to take off your own wheel and you're traveling that most shops will find a way to squeeze you in.  Usually I'm out within a hour after I ride up out of the blue.

One of these days I'll get around to learning the correct way to snatch a wheel off the RT (so far I've been lucky with warranty paying for everything  ;)) - I've done it tons of times on all my other bikes, but for the $30 that they're gonna charge me for the whole kit and kaboodle....why should I get my hands dirty ??  ;D

Nice find!

It wasn't a "find."  I posted over at ADV in the regionals asking where to find good camping near Stanley.

That's where the Iderho BMW Riders have their annual Stanley Stomp.

The Lolo campground is one I've stayed at a couple of times before.

Scheduled Delivery:
Thursday, 06/16/2011, By End of Day

No further updates will be available unless they are a no show or they forgot to pack something essential......

Well, everything showed up today EXCEPT the o-rings that fit under the intakes manifolds. FMRin'. So I called and got Rusty who said they were shipped with a previous order. I said, nope, that was 2 fuel lines I ordered before I even knew I needed all this other ch!t.
So, "Rose", who lives in Boston, by a FedEx facility, is going to drop them off on her way home, overnight delivery. Should be here by Sat., maybe Fri. ::)

Trail goes cold in manhunt for Montana fugitive

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS Associated Press
Posted: 06/16/2011 01:16:40 AM PDT
Updated: 06/16/2011 01:39:47 PM PDT

MISSOULA, Mont.—A Montana fugitive and ex-militia leader has been on the run since a Sunday shootout with deputies, but the trail has gone cold.

Missoula County Sheriff Carl Ibsen said Thursday that deputies were trying to develop leads to find David Burgert, who authorities say ran off into the Lolo National Forest after exchanging shots with deputies following a low-speed car chase.

Police think Burgert is hiding somewhere in the mountains near the Montana-Idaho border, an area of towering peaks, low brush and thick pine forests. In recent decades, this remote region has proven fertile ground for extremist groups including the Militia of Montana, the neo-Nazi Aryan Nations and many others.
Burgert once led an anti-government militia in northwestern Montana known as Project 7. It was broken up after Burgert was arrested in 2002 on weapons charges. He spent eight years in federal prison before being released in March 2010.

I've changed my plans.  The campground in Montana is too far away and there's no f'n way I'm gonna ride Lolo Pass in the dark - too many f'n deer around there.  It would be sewercide.

I'm gonna stay at a BLM campground about 15 miles east of Lewiston on 12.

Did you read the article?  He's a militia dude that has arms stocks in the woods.  I'll bet he's wearing body armor so you'll need something piercing.

Looks like I'll be taking the RS.  I just swapped in a water pump on the LT today and I subscribe to the "don't do something to your bike and then take it for a long ride" philosophy.

Besides, the RS hasn't had a good long ride lately.

as of right now there is 100% chance of dry from lewiston to lolo to stanley n back with temps between 35 n 75... yeeeeehaaaaaa...

now to the matter at hand...

just rolled into portland orogoon...

check this out... the 06 dunflop sportmax d220 on the new to me rs wheel... when i pulled the valve core to put the ride-on in i got a blast of green liquid out the valve stem... didnt think much of it...

today at our job in redd bluff california i noticed a glob of green goo on the tire... after further investigation i noticed a tiny hole... im thinking the ride-on didnt take cause someone filled that more with slime... wish i would have known cause i would have put a pr2 on it saturday n not wasted a bottle of ride-on...

anyway it will probably be ok but im sure the stress of 2 up will heat that old tire up n expand the hole... not worth the chance... so i called the bmw joint by the portland airport which is by our hotel n they have pr2s n pr3s in stock... about $20 bucks more than online for the 2s n about 50 bucks more than online for the 3s n $30 to install if i take the wheel off... so im gonna roll over there at 10am n do the deal on the pr2s... at least they will install my metal valve stem so i can run my tire pressure monitor...

and by the way... i gotts a couple boxes of these...

Don't think they'll work real well for plugging tires, but they do make for more than adequate ear plugs in a pinch - DAMHIK  ::)
