I'm 33 been riding and wrenching on bikes for about 10 years mostly Yamaha's with one Ninja that i rode once. I just inherited a 97 BMW K1100LT from my father, my first ever BMW. He hasn't ridden it in 4 years and prior to that he rode it maybe a handfull of times in the 8 years he's owned it.
The good it was stored with a full tank of what is now very old gas, and it was serviced regularly prior to being put up and was stored in the back of his garage so no critters or weather has had its way with it.
The bad obviously it has been sitting and as such I'm working my way through all the electrical connections and replacing any and all fluids I can think of.
I've siphoned the fuel and flushed the system with new so the bike starts after a bit of cranking so I may still need to do another clean on the injectors. need to check seals rebuild the brake masters and flush with new DOT 4 fluid.
Original reason the bike was parked was the hand brake would keep the brake light on, originally diagnosed as faulty switch/electrical I found the master wasn't returning the lever far enough to actuate the switch.
So kinda a long first intro post. Let me know if there is anything specific to these bikes I should take extra care to inspect/repair. also if theres anyone in the Bath/Brunswick area of Maine and wants to ride or wrench I'm always down.

Welcome....I can't advise on anything mechanical, especially if it has to do with herding electrons.......It sounds like you have
made substantial progress so far.......
I imagine there is plenty of pleasant country riding in Maine...enjoy it..

Probably best to have a look at the card catalog in the lieberry, lots of cool tidbits in there from the basics to the complex.

Once I get her cleaned up pics will be coming in short order. I can say she's maroon with gray top. She's very barn fresh at this moment from sitting.
So far I can get her started with a bit of cranking but once shes started she idles well and revs easy. Dash switches seem to have their normal weak conncetions from age(hazards don't always want to flash unless you push the switch just right.)

Ohh cool you got a LE. I came very close to buying one the same color. Guy wouldn't come down. Month later after I bought he came down lol.
The big thing, as your finding, is age. The rubber bits just are not holding up. I'd recommend looking at the fuel lines, vac lines, crank case vent line that's behind TPS and if it has any irregular idle the throttle body boots (BMW calls them bushing). I had to replace them all on mine (like this week! LOL).
