Title: Running like a bag of spanners!
Post by: Zipster on April 06, 2014, 01:30:25 PM
Whilst riding home from work on Friday my 1996 K1100LT lost power and frankly was running like a bag of spanners - no power and lots of chugging along etc. My initial thought was fuel starvation. On pulling in to check my fuel, I heard a loud whining noise which stopped when I turned the bike off but returned after I'd driven a short distance again.

After some discussions with chums I decided to do some basic servicing in order to rule out the consumables before investigating further so I ordered new spark plugs and a fuel filter and today I went out to syphon off some fuel in order to make the fuel filter change easier. For some reason, I opened the fuel tank and then started the bike - this is what I saw.

I guess this is the source of my bother!!

(I hope this video works)

Hopefully that's not the original fuel filter..... There was a TSB(#2794) for faulty filters that can leak at the folded seam.
That one was sure pissing a good stream.
Get yourself a decent metal filter. Napa 3032 is a good generic replacement.
Because of the system pressure don't do plastic.

Old filter out without issue and new filter (courtesy of Wemoto) installed and she's running sweet as a nut. The old filter was a BMW filter and was marked 06/92. Considering it's a 1996 bike, I wonder could it have been the original filter? She's done 96,000 miles so it would be pretty amazing if it was!
