Title: registering my barn find
Post by: k75chip on December 20, 2013, 05:21:35 PM
Hello all,
New to this so  any help would be great.
Bought a knackered k75s that appears to have been left in a field for a few years and although it has a reg plate on it the vin plate has been at a point of impact(done for).
My problem isgetting a logbook for it.
The stamped numbers on frame match the reg plate cos i got hpi but the 7 stamped numbers are not enough for our friends at the dvla.
From a bit of research i have deduced that the stamped numbers on the frame are part of the vin plate code but wondered if the preceeding letters and numbers can be worked out?
I understand that all bmw bikes have some kind of inbuilt code on vin plates and wondered if any of you 'k' kids could guide me through this, furthest i got was establishing it was built in 88.
If i can't sort this its gonna end up on a q plate(really don't want that)
Hope you can help
many thanks
Mel

Hey Mel.  Sorry I'm no help for your question (heck I hardly understand much of it with all the codes) but I want to say:

Welcome!
Where are you from?

my USA market 1985 K100 has a sticker on the left side of the frame by the lift handle with the Vehicle Identification Number on it, and ALSO has a VIN stamped vertically on the right side of the engine, below the crank case cover, along the edge of the transmission.

My engine is not the original, so it wouldnt help me in your situation, but maybe it will help you.

Punch the last 7 digits of the code in here and see what happens.....

Sorry to all out there, been asking about vin plates and 'dvla'and shortly after realised that you all seem to be from the USofA .
Different set of rules over there I imagine ( I live in a town on the outskirts of Sheffield england)and as you probably know we live and die by red tape and although the authorities know the full vin number they won't tell me! So just getting a bit wound up with these chinless penpushers.
Apologies again and a great new year to you all.

Mostly US but not all. There is a mix some from UK and other parts of Europe. Still might get a response.
