Title: Aftermarket horn and heated grips -- help!
Post by: Motorhobo on November 21, 2013, 11:22:56 PM
OK --need to fix the aftermarket horn and aftermarket heated grips on my 94 K75 so I can get it on the market. Only one of the heated grips works and only one of the tones works on the 2-tone aftermarket horn so that the only sound that comes out of it is an anemic 'peep' that sounds so ridiculous I'm embarrassed to use it.

These things aren't on the main fuse panel (all those fuses are good) so I assume a separate fuse or relay was installed somewhere. The grips were installed with a 2-position toggle switch cut into the instrument panel rather than adding an OEM switch on the panel. I know next to nothing about wiring -- I have a new multimeter that is still in the box waiting for me to deal with this but I don't know where to start.

Can anyone give me a pointer in the right direction? Doesn't even have to be the right direction -- any direction will do.

Ok, for the horns here is what I would do.  You said one horn works, right.  Un-plug both horns, use the multimeter to test for voltage at the horn connectors.
The multimeter should have DCV settings.  Likely it has a 20 DCV, use this setting.  It might have different places to plug in the test leads, so make sure they are correct.
I assume it is a digital multimeter so don't worry about the polarity.  Connect the test leads to the horn leads.  Note there might a short ground
(-) wire that connects the negative terminal on the horn the chassis and only one wire that leads back into the bike.  Press the horn button, you should be getting 10-13 volts.
Test both leads.  If they both have voltage then likely the horn is bad.

Another quick is to just swap the horns.  If the one that does not work starts working then you have a wiring issue.

Ok...I will do it. I've been procrastinating because I don't hav a game plan, but this is a good start. Once I get into it I know I will figure it out...I am one persistent sonofabitch.

Thanks subforry!
