Title: Filling up k1100rs gas tank
Post by: subforry on November 05, 2013, 12:17:02 PM
Hi all,

On the way home last night the gas reserve light came on and off.  This morning I pulled out of my steep driveway and the bike stumbled from fuel starvation.  Waiting at a light on a slight incline the pump is buzzing and sucking in air.  A mile later when I got to the gas station it only took 3.8gal.  I did my best to top it up.  When I pushed the flap out of the way, fuel came up.

The bike was on its side stand.

Is it not really full?  Should I just ignore the fuel pump's complaints?

Thanks

If you remove the flap assembly you can shove an extra .5gal (us) in it on the center stand.
If you do this you want to do the "cup mod" and only jam that in if you plan to run it 20 miles before parking. It may burp fuel out the vent if its sitting and the tank warms and if it's a newer model with a vapor recovery hose that burp of gas will end up in the crank case.

On mine I made a little story pole so I could make consistent fills.

Not worth the effort to put it on the centerstand IMHO.  On my flapperless K75 I filled it on the sidestand then popped it up on the centerstand.  Didn't make enough difference to worry about.  Took me about 20 years to figger that out.

I filler up without getting off the bike. Just hold it up straight to top off.

When I've got mine all packed down and on the road I do the same thing.
Check the oil before I start for the day, and maybe 1/2 way along the way.

More fuel questions:

On a trip I filled the tank as full as I could get it, on the center stand and I took my time topping up the tank.  After some riding I am thinking I have used about 4 gals and I hear a buzz from the pump.
When I pull into the gas station it is really buzzing.  Again I took my time filling the tank and it only took 4.5 gal.

I had a thought that some PO might have messed up the fuel pickup and it is not low enough.  Looking at the manual this could only happen if the pump is not installed correctly.  Is this possible?
I am going to replace the fuel filter soon.  I will look at removing the flap.  Is there anything else I should be checking when I replace the filter?

Thanks.  I just want another 1/2 gallon before the pump starts sucking air.

4.2 to 4.7 is abouts the most i getts in on a full fill with no flapper...

noisy pump... i try to fill before its getts low enough to stress the pump... i can go 180mi 2up... butts i likes to fill about 150mi...

new strainer + new filter + dehydrated tank + fill with a gallon still in it may help with the buzz...
