Hi,
recently acquired a K75S, 1987. The little green rubber cover is mostly gone on my starter button. I believe it is what keeps the button up, so consequently my brick will try to run the starter at times I am not expecting :( Anybody got a spare one they'd want to sell me?

Look up starter brushes and load shed relay. They give those symptoms. The button is pretty cut and dry. if it springs back up Id be more worried about the other problems.
-
Sounds like your battery voltage may be too low, if you are not operating with at least 10 volts on the battery the starter relay has a tendency to weld closed and then the starter remains engaged. That's why some BMW riders get more than a little obsessed with battery replacement every 3yrs.

I read he needs a button....Ebay or Beemer Boneyard

Anyone have any luck finding a replacement starter button for these k bikes? I've seen a few posts about attempts to 3D print these, a one-off brass button example, and finally a syringe cap that has seemed to work as a replacement, but haven't found any options for an OEM purchase. The button on my bike has come apart leaving the center portion attached to the switchgear. Gluing may be an option although that might be tenuous at best? I can still start it but would prefer not to leave it this way and would like to avoid the cost of replacing the entire switchgear. If this isn't an option, perhaps an alternative would be to remove the broken button piece and add a momentary push button starter switch somewhere on the bike???
Thx. :2thumbup:

Thanks Laitch, I would have never found this site on my own. Just goes to show the value of this community and members like you. BMW still sells the indicator buttons and some other replacement parts for the switchgear, but not the starter button for some reason. :dunno Surprisingly, these parts seem to have been designed poorly from an ergonomic and durability standpoint (out in the elements, gloved hands, high use), but for 15 bucks shipped, which is kind of spendy for a tiny little green button, if it works I prefer this option to replacing the entire switchgear! :2thumbup:

My K75 had the same issue, I guess old age made the plastic brittle. I put in a used K100 switch from eBay, it fits right in to the bars and the loom with no mods needed.
-
Superglue'ing the old button now, while waiting for an R850 right hand switch assembly gets here from ebay. $17 shipped.
-
I used the Harbor Freight, "plastic welder" and some of the green PolyPropelene rod to add material to the top of the OEM button. Both to add to the superglue strength, and to build up the material a little. As a side benefit, it's pretty close to the same color of green!

Hello Ed!
Oh, I would love a maple cappuccino, but you are a tad far from me, as I reside in Hungary. Anyway, my switch disintegrated today (I have just acquired my K75S a few weeks ago, and have been finding answers to all my ailments on this forum, thank you for that), and was searching for a replacement... If you still have a spare switch lurking around, and don't mind posting it, I would be more than happy to take one off your hand :) Obviously you name a price + postage ;)
Kind regards!
Gabriel

I just made a replacement for the green start button (in white) if that's what you're looking for. I don't have the the whole assembly.

Dear Ed, of course I've meant the button only, it is my lousyness to mix up stuff, sorry :)

Everybody check your start buttons. Light gravity might be affecting things today and bocutter Ed is firing up the lathe.

Heard about your wrist from Rob when we met Darren in Youngstown. We wondered where you were. Hope you heel up soon. How did the bike fare in the assault?

Not too bad, I guess, considering I had 2 car lengths notice, @ ~50 kph, that he was pulling, from 0 kph, into my lane. Tagged the passenger door, then the curb ...
Windshield, both mirrors, center & right fairings, valve cover, crank cover.
Notice the white start button (staying on topic :giggles ).

Question for you, Ed: What holds the white or green button in place?
My green button head has broken off and the spring flew away somewhere. The green shaft remains. What holds it in, and how do I get it out?
-
There is a brass(?) contact pin coming up from the bottom. The pin's upper part is knurled and press fit into the green button's tube. The whole thing is held together like a hose on a hose barb, easy to push on but difficult to remove.
The assembly can got at by removing the screw under the start/kill switch. The start/kill assembly is held in that assembly with an 'e' clip. Careful :yikes:, there are a couple of small springs you don't want to lose. I was going to drill down to the pin to punch it out, but the spring-loaded center punch split the head on the green shaft ... punched the pin out.
ps, too bad you lost the spring ...

I've decided to 3D print mine. Fired up Fusion 360 and after 13 different tries, (My original button broke, so I was missing a part.) I have a functioning button.
From here I'm going to cast a green one, as I don't trust PLA 3D printed plastic to hold up for long in the real world.
-
I'll smooth it out before casting it.
