Title: Gear indicator showing blank-No start
Post by: DangerD1967 on October 09, 2013, 11:29:23 PM
 :dunno
1994 K75s that is making me cry. I know I am in neutral, I am getting full power from my battery, all the other instrument panel lights are working, but the neutral light and gear indicator show nothing. I have tried to consult the Haynes manual but can not figure out which wires to check for faults, or if I need to troubleshoot inside the electrical box...I spent 25 minutes in full gear this morning grunting and cussing instead of riding in perfect weather (55 degrees might seem cold to some, but after a humid southern summer; 55 is perfect!) trying to figure it out, opted for staying in full gear and driving to work with the windows down and helmet on in the car....want to ride, please help!

If your gear indicator shows blank in all gears, I would have started with checking if the switch
connector have come apart....or is corroded.
It's a four pin connector with three yellow wires with tracers and a brown wire (ground),
you find it under the RHS battery cover.

It is always one or more of the yellow wires is connected to ground, depending of which
gear is selected.
When non of the yellow wires is grounded you would get a blank g.i. screen and no neutral light.

Could also be a good idea to check that the brown wire at the connector on the harness side
got a good ground connection.

It could also be other reasons for the problem, but in my opinion these would be the most obvious.

Does the bike not start with the clutch pulled in?
It's not REQUIRED that the bike be in neutral to start or that the gpi work to ride.

Sounds like you may have a couple of different issues. Like Inge said, check the wiring connections.
You may also have a bad clutch switch. Not uncommon for them(clutch switch) to go bad.

Thanks for the quick response! I went out with my first cup of coffee and more time on my hands. I checked the connections and found the main issue, but need advice on permanent fix. The four pin connector was checked, cleaned and put back together. I checked the entire length and found that when I pulled the radiator reservoir out of the way that I had play where the wire leads down to the rear end of the gearbox. Finding a "sweet" spot I could keep the GI on with the green neutral light beaming like sunshine. I need advice on accessing that end of the connection to try and keep from being in the jiggle and hope mode. I am a new-b and don't have all the tools or even a true garage to work in, but I am dedicated to keeping her going till I reach 100k miles (64k to go) without just throwing money at the local BMW dealership. So I truly appreciate all the help I get here!

I have never been able to start without being in neutral, so any advice on that situation???

Was shocked that I caught no humorous response to driving in full gear, I found it hilarious myself....

I'd suspect the clutch safety switch on the clutch perch is probably bad/dirty sticking and not letting you start with the lever pulled in.

To get to the harness connector to test/replace the clutch switch it's under the fuel tank.

Or bypass switch and always pull the clutch in to start.
