Title: Shifter Problem K75
Post by: hoodun on September 16, 2013, 03:01:08 AM
I have an issue with the shifter rod in the transmission. It just spins freely. The lever is tight. It is actually the rod that is spinning inside the transmission. Any one else have this problem??

I'm going to either have to rip the transmission apart or purchase a new one. Guess I'll rip it apart first and see if Its something I can fix.

Do a search on the site for "grub screw" this is the most likely culprit.

Video explains it well.

Hope this helps.

The grub screw inside the gear box needs to be tightened. You'll need to remove the transmission to do this :(

Thoroughly clean and dry the grub screw and receptacle threads, and use  red Loctite otherwise it will loosen up again sooner than you want.

It's a good time to do a full spline lube, check/replace the clutch if necessary, and replace the rear main seal and O-ring if leaking.

Thanks!

Nice to see you have 115k on your k75. I was concerned about the high mileage on mine - 50k.

I just purchased this bike with the transmission problem, so I was planning to rip the transmission out before the purchase... I found a video on this site that explains everything step by step. I just did a complete tea rdown and rebuild of a 1975 R90 so I feel confident in tackling this.

I was dissapointed when my bike started wearing down at 100k. Low mileage for one of these. Previous owner flaked on the maintenance I think. A 4000 mile, high load, high speed for most of it, tour with a stuck open thermostat didn't help either.

Thanks for the great info. Turns out it was just the screw. Its not coming out again now that I covered it in red loctite. At least I hope.

The splines look brand new at 58k!! Im happy to have dodged that bullet.
