I've been experiencing this issue way too often on my '93 K1100lt.
Start bike, I hear starter still cranking, I have to remove seat- lift gas tank up- lift cover up- and tap on starter relay box to get it to stop!
On one hand I heard this can happen more easily with a weak battery. But I had just rebuilt my alternator and I have a brand new battery!
Could I just need a new relay? Is it a starter relay or starter solenoid? Is there a radioshack or other cheaper part I car source besides BMW OEM?

Replace your relay.
Once it gets stuck once, the contact surfaces enjoy getting stuck again.

check the brushes of the startermotor they are probably worn

Yeah, grab a relay. Can't hurt to pull the starter and clean the brushes/commutator as well.
I've seen cheaper ones sourced from bosch before. Euromotoelectrics has one for 66 http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/BOSCH-Starter-Relay-BMW-K-61-31-1-459-008-p/rel-k008.htm (http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/BOSCH-Starter-Relay-BMW-K-61-31-1-459-008-p/rel-k008.htm)
Take a look at your relay, and see if there are part numbers on it. Bosch or tyco will sell one similar.
