I know the tank capacity should be (K75) 21 liters (or maybe 20,5 liters in this police version as some space has been taken for the police equipments) but I think it's less? Red light was burning and I couldn't get the rpm over 4000, riding wasn't smooth anymore (started jerking) so the tank was probably rather empty. But when I filled it up to the limit, it took only 18 liters in?

2 liters doesn't fill much of the space. they pickup isn't exactly at the bottom, and the fill doesn't go exactly to the top.

That means that when the red light turns on on my bike, the gas-station should be very close... after some 40 kilometers the tank obviously was rather empty.

every motobrick i have ridden triggers the fuel light at different levels... has gotts to do with the float and the float arm... the bug would have 30 miles left when the light came on... the burd will have 10 miles when the light comes on... the brick of the corn will have 5 miles when the light comes on...
i know where im at on the odometer and motometer... do not look for the fuel light... if i did i would have made the walk of shame... you know... walking for fuel... the walk of shame... ha ha ha...

Yes, that's how I ride since that "almost case" - I'm a bit too careful with gas: I ride only about 300 kms or 200 miles. Then about 14 liters is gone so there should be gas for 100 kms left...

Last weekend I tested my K100RT -85 range. Tank capasity is 22 liters and I had extra fuel canister in side tragkorb. After 400km tank was quite dry but still running, so there is the limit when I should be very near the fuel station. Fuel consumption is about 5,5liters/100km so 400km is in fact the theoretical range. 4 liters light turns on somewere near 300km. I was earlier also wery carful with fuel and just in case, I was looking fuel station when trip meter was a little bit over 300km. Today, I trust trip meter.

I just ran out of gas at 289 km. That shouldn't even be possible, right? I had filled it up as far as I could while sitting on the bike and keeping it centered. I'm new to this bike, so I suspect the original importers have 5 l of cocaine or something in the tank. I'm going to fill it up later, so I'll see how much I can put in, but it's not going to be over 20 liters, that I'm sure of. Or is it just possible that I have a smaller tank? It's a '95 K1100LT Special Edition.

Now I filled it up to the brim with 17 liters. How the hell is this possible? I understand that the hose from the tank is not at the bottom, but this is 5 liters we're talking about. Any explanations? Or does the "Special Edition" in K1100LT Special Edition mean "with a smaller tank"?

I alway thought they figured tank capacity on the optimistic side. You didn't mention if you still had the flapper, removing that adds another liter or so. And it makes it easier to eyeball remaining fuel.

17 liters is about 4.5 gallons....289k is about 180 miles. ...40 miles to the gallon
My low fuel light comes on at about 170 miles and I have a gallon left.
Sounds like you need to remove the flapper and either tune the bike or ride with a lighter wrist:))

My 95 is taking 3.8-3.9 US gallons from light to about 3/4in under the lip (with the flap part removed). That seems to be the point where im not in much dange of the tank venting liquid. With hwy bias that's about 180 miles indicated and my speedo is about 5% fast. With some correction it works out to 44.5 mpg.
If I filled it right to the lip I'm sure I can get 4.25-4.5 gallons squeezed in if I was on the road and going to run a good bit out before stopping so it would vent raw fuel.
I recently had a leak in the tank fixed. I know it starts pumping bubbles with about a quart still in the tank with it sitting on the center stand. I used a vacuum pump to pull that last quart out. So my reserve is about 3 quarts. So I think that works our to the spec (5.5 gallon?).
Before I had the tank worked on the light was coming on earlier.
Ive actually made a little deal so that I can get consistent fills to deal with my MPG OCD issue. Picture below. There is a scribe line 1/2 up that. Thats my mark that I get about 3.8 gallons in if I stop right when the light comes on. The lip at the bottom is half a gallon less.
Sorry I'm going to play the lazy card and not do the metric conversion.

I disassembled and fixed my failing fuel level sender today and discovered some design aspects that account for that account for the variability in reserve volumes that people see.

Reserve Level Adjusting
The point where the low fuel light illuminates is dependent on the point during the rotation of the lower wiper when it encounters the contact plate. There is an adjustment on the sender which can determine when the lower wiper contacts the plate.

In the photo above, you can see a toothed wheel. This wheel rotates on a nylon pivot, causing the bottom plate to be rotated and the contact to change position. Using a small screwdriver, get a purchase on either of the indicated lever points and engage the tip of the screwdriver's blade with one of the teeth of the wheel. Rotate the wheel with a levering action.
- Rotating the wheel CLOCKWISE will cause the wiper to contact earlier, resulting in a LARGER reserve volume.
- Rotating the wheel COUNTERCLOCKWISE will cause the wiper to contact later, resulting in a SMALLER reserve volume.
