Title: Tire date stamp
Post by: cmichael on August 22, 2013, 01:10:58 PM
Trying to get ready for a 8-10k mile ride.  Rear tire is brand new, front was new when I got the bike 4 years ago.  It still has good tread depth but is starting to get minuscule sidewall cracks in it.

I found what I believe is the date code but the tire can't be older than my bike....?!?!

Open to advice, tire is a dunlop

greetings...

im thinking its not the 26th week of 89... butts who knows... need more info...

year 2000 and newer its the week and the year... example 2609 would be 26th week of 2009...

i scored a 94 k1100rs 2 years ago with 13,000 miles on it... it had tiors with a 2003 born on date...

previous to year 2000 they just used a year code... just the last number... so 9 could be 1989 or 1999... so its best to know what brand and model of you tior so you can figger out when that make and model was being sold...

so its a dunflop... what model is it...

Tire date slug that came on mine looked like this. They'll have to swap out the slug weekly so the # in your photo is not likely the date.

Yeah, I was placing it at 89 too, but on a 95?  Plus the tire was new when I got the bike.  Will look closer for a another date mark and also take better pictures of the cracks for yalls expert advice.

The date code should be part of the DOT number.  It will usually be on 1 side, near the bead of the tire.

I think they add a number per decade.  But the last 3 numbers will generally be the week/and year.  IE: DOT gkur-2345-523*,  the 523 would mean the tire was made the 52nd week of 2003 or 2013, depending on the total number of digits in the whole DOT number.

*completely made up number.

And as an FYI the other numbers should tell you where the tire was made (that gkur, I put on my made up number, should be similar to a Goodyear) and the other numbers will likely be the manufacturers numbers.
When a tire is retreaded, the retreaders add and additional DOT stamp near the original, that gives the same info.

OK, motobrickers, we all like to save our money but tires are not the place to do it. Everyone check the dates on their tires....over 4 years old and you're playing Russian Roulette.

OK...OK...Mystic.... I forked over $75 for a new tire...just one less day on my trip, but at least I will not worry constantly.

I still have yet to find a date stamp, I will look closer tomorrow as the new one is due to arrive in the AM. :bmwsmile

That's fresh! You should wear off the tread before you need reminding. ..::)
