So the new bike committed suicide on a simple flat straight road yesterday, coming back from Johnny O's Midwest get together.
She had a sudden and catastrophic loss of rear air pressure at about 65mph, resulting in the wife and I doing a high side and the bike barrel rolling a couple times.

However, I went to the towing company today and got a couple of lousy pictures that confuse me. Take a look at this two pics and tell me what you think happened.
We noticed the shock was leaking about 30 minutes before the crash and figured it would need a rebuild. It is an IKON shock.
You will note in the pictures the shock is broken and the tire sidewall is gone. Thoughts?

P.S. We are both OK. No breaks or serious injuries, but we do hurt.

shock failure...
if it were me I would leave photos posted on line but not say a word...
then I would call ikon in san francisco and show them the photos... and ask them how they would like to proceed... that shock is old and you are not the original owner... butts that does not matter...
that shock should not have broken in half like... this is a potentially deadly situation for every single rider running that same shock... this needs immediate attention before somebody dies...
they need to replace your moto and reimburse all associated monies... then they need to get all those same shocks off the street...

I would agree Johnny, except I was the original owner and I took it off my previous K11RS which, as you know, also crashed. I did not see any damage or evidence of it even hitting the ground, but it was involved in the previous get off. May have been a stupid move to reuse it. Glad I did sell it to anyone.
EDIT: But I do intend to contact IKON and let them know about it.

the shock should have not broken... if you bought it new did ikon know you were gonna be 2 up loaded or did they sell you a racing shock for 1 up...

No, they knew it was for two up traveling. I've already sent my initial email. We'll see what happens.

keep us informed... the photos tell the story of mangled mayhem and helmets and protective gear...
droning down the 26... surprise... never would have been expecting something like that... i keep an eye on my tire pressure dispaly... butts wham its over aints gonna show up till wham and its over...
you are good now... i know people who commenced to wrecking on two separate motobricks... butts not three... so im thinking you are good to go or you will be world famous for the hat trick...

You sure the shock did not break during the barrel rolls during the crash?
I will say that tire sidewall looks cut and the most likely culprit would be the shock based on the looks of it.

in the beginning i though it was the tire 1st then everything else after that... butts after looking at more photos im thinking the shock 1st and everything else after that...
ikon should hire walt fulton to investigate this accident... he would figger it out...

Thanks for asking Wayne. She suffered no serious injuries or broken bones.
She does have some badly bruised ribs, which are no fun at all.

I am curious how this ended up. How did Ikon respond to your inquiries? What was the end result. My mechanic is currently recommending an iKon shock for my rear. So, I'm very interested in knowing more.

bob t has moved on... butts i stopped at his place and spoke to him a few months ago...
when his shock broke i urged him to go to ikon with this mattter... not to seek damages butts to make an attempt to getts this shock off the road because we didnt wanna see this happen again...
he told me his insurance paid off and he was moving away from motobricks... he told me the moto was parted out and the shock was in a distant landfill... he simply didnt want to fuss with it... so be it...

Is he still riding at all? He and his rider are lucky to be alive. I don't know if I'd have the guts to get back on any bike after that.

he had a few in the garage... he is a triumph guy... does track days and stuff like that... has the garage and the trailer and all that stuff...
the motobrick was his 2up moto... he got a yellow triumph with the insurance settlement... i think it was a daytona... it a beauty...

Blast, I wouldn't put an Ikon on for anything. There are too many better options in the same basic price range. YSS, Works, RAM, etc. Pick one YOU like and tell him to install it. Or, If you do it yourself, it will take about 30 minutes, a couple of metric allen wrenches, a 3/8" metric socket set, your torque wrench and a few libations to celebrate your completed task. Dialing it may take an hour or so.

Not to detract from it, but from the photos as clear as I can see them I would be hesitant to pick the order of shock/tyre failure. I'd probably say very roughly 57% shock first though ;) Go along pretty much any major road in the UK and odds are you will see the entire tread portion of (usually) a truck tyre sitting on the side of the road, presumably the sidewalls stayed on the rim after it delaminated...
Even if it was the shock that went first (and let's assume it was for the sake of the argument), I still wouldn't see it as cause to write them off completely. How many other catastrophic failures of ikon shocks are known? As is the nature of 'things', things sometimes break seemingly of their own accord. Yes, there's always a reason (manufacturing defect, fatigue, mistreatment, maladjustment, etc, etc, etc) but those reasons are very rarely endemic.
Also, what is it that makes YSS, works, RAM et al 'better' than Ikon, or for that matter OEM? That's a genuine question by the way (I think everyone on here knows by now my stance on the RAM 'testing' procedure so no need to go there again), is there an actual measurement of 'betterness' or is it once again "some bloke on the internet says so"? I know what makes, say, Ohlins better but they're not exactly a 'budget' choice.
Actually, scratch all that - I'd be happy to run an Ikon shock and if they get a very bad reputation I reckon the price will come down :hehehe

My wife & I had a similar "get off" a Honda VF1000FF when the back wheel locked up at 75mph(long story) back in 1991,sadly although I still ride,my wife's confidence was destroyed and she has never been on a motorcycle since.I hope the original poster has managed to cope better than we did.

I can't remember the exact timeline, but I do remember that it was their 2nd 1100RS that was totaled in a "get-off" in less than a year.
