I'm having to replace a bulb inside the instrument cluster. Got the unit off the bike okay and have the back removed. Followed Clymer's (somewhat confusing -- to me) instructions and removed two screws at base of the printed circuit board, then 4 other screws around the perimeter. Clymer says to use a flat-bladed screwdriver and "carefully pry" the circuit board loose from its various contact points.
First of all, I'm not sure what the "contact points" are, and secondly, I've "carefully" pried all around the perimeter of the board and am afraid if I pried any more vigorously something would crack. It really seems attached to something! And I've checked all around for any screws I might have missed. None. There's only a few tiny jeweler's sized screws that are holding really tiny things on the surface. I've used a small needle-nose pliers to grip and pull up where I could get a grip, but it still won't budge. Am I being too cautious?
Any tips would bring gratitude. Thanks.

exactly what bulb are you trying to replace. they should all be accessible from the back side of the board without removing it.

I did finally figure that out -- I opened up the Haynes manual that I normally don't like, but am finding that I need both Haynes and Clymer after all. Haynes doesn't have the photos, but did a much better job with the explanation.
My original problem: the speedometer face had lost lighting on the right half of the face. Now that I've discovered the bulb holders that are accessible from the circuit board, it appears as though the face of the speedometer is lit by two green bulbs -- one at the upper right corner and one at the lower left corner. Is this right? All the other bulbs are dedicated to specific tinted windows -- turn indicators, fuel, etc.
Now that I've gotten this far I'm wondering if I should replace all the bulbs while I have the chance. Any thoughts?

Replace the lamps with LED's and you won't be disappointed.

I have done LED's on both of my bikes. IIRC I didn't change the warning lamps. All the backlighting and turn signal indicators were changed.

Last month I replaced the main dash bulbs on my K1100LT with LED's from "frankenduck"
Once the dash is out I only had to remove the rear cover (6 or 8 screws from memory) then could remove all the bulbs with fingers, I think I used long nose pliers on the two bulbs for the clock.

:bmwsmileThanks all! I've ordered LED's from duck and will replace all the old bulbs. Am happy to learn of his site. As well as this one -- my first post. I'm ttrying to do more of my own work on the bike.
