Come ride with me and show your support for Wrenching Wenches Motorcycle Network!

The forum that I'm building is http://wrenchingwenches.com/ (http://wrenchingwenches.com/)

For the past 12 months plus I have been planning and preparing for an Iron Butt ride attempt coming up next month.

The ride is called Sunset to Sunrise Insanity and only 19 men have completed it. To date, no woman has finished this ride.

I plan to be the first.

I will need to ride 3580+ miles in less than 72 hours.

If I complete the ride East to West, I'll be the first woman to do that however, if I complete it WEST to EAST I'll be the first person ever.

You can follow me live via my Spot Tracker Share Page starting on July 25th 2013.

I have spent hundreds of dollars and hundreds of hours wrenching, building, modifying, fabricating and tweaking my 1994 K1100RS.

I wish to recognize my husband and thank him for all his help, tolerance and patience with what has seemed like a never ending project. As of today, it's 95% finished and will be ready to ride in time. I could not have done it with him by my side.

Yes, the SPOT Tracker link is in the first post but nothing is there until I turn it on when I depart from home on the 25th.

This is from 2011 on my IBA 50CC ride.
http://www.ironbutt.com/rides/50cc.htm (http://www.ironbutt.com/rides/50cc.htm)

I have to avg. more than that so that I have time to sleep.

To make it more interesting, I hope to pull off this IBA ride >>>Saddle Sore 2000 Gold – 2,000 miles in under 36 hours. <<<
On the East to West run.

And this ride >>> Bun Burner 3000 GOLD <<<

On the West to East run.

Heightened expectations on an extended ride like this worry me. If the ride is problem free and Mother Nature cooperates then you'll certainly have time for necessary rest, and you'll have a great ride. However if any issues arise, whether mechanical or weather related, I hope your drive to reach the goal does not impair your judgement to do what is safe.

Trying to make-up unplanned lost time can be disastrous. It might make sense to set realistic daily goals and if those aren't reached... there's always next year.

Good luck!

I'll just mark this under the classification "You don't know me, or how I ride or what's important to me or what I've been through to".

I'll let others speak for me.

Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment. - Jim Rohn

What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals. - Henry David Thoreau

You need to overcome the tug of people against you as you reach for high goals. - George S. Patton

I wish you a successful ride.

When I read your posts I was thinking about a cross country ride I did last year. I had planned to slab it from NY to WA at a reasonable pace in about four or five days. Had a mechanical problem that grounded me for a day in CT, and then ran into the mother of all lightning storms in SD. Intent on not falling behind, I rode through the storm which was totally stupid but I fortunately came out white-knuckled and unscathed.

About 300 miles from home after 16 hours of riding on day#3 I should have stopped for the night, but a voice told me to push on. I remember dreaming up all kinds of justifications for continuing on while I watched the white stripes and dark fields zoom by. A little later I started to hallucinate and reluctantly pulled over and fell asleep leaning against a fence post at 3am. In retrospect I feel that if I had continued even a few more miles I would have become a twisted mess of bones on the roadside.

In my case nobody cared how fast I got home besides me.
In your case you'll have followers routing you on and a immovable deadline in the back of your mind.

Ride safe. See you at MotoDungee!

Was going to ask if you had done other IBA rides, but obviously you have so cool.  I have seen too many people bite off way more than they can chew on a first ride "It can't be that hard" .. yeah, think again pal. This ride requires 50mph total average which is easily doable if you plan correctly. Good luck, have fun, be safe!  You gots PLENTY o' time.  :yes

FYI, you may not want to leave the Garmin photo up, the IBA frowns on speeding to meet a certification - "The Iron Butt Association is dedicated to safe, long-distance motorcycle endurance riding."  They really need to rethink the "endurance" word as well with the litigious nature of the world currently. I know almost all of us push the limit a bit, but it is best not to advertise it.

I don't have cell service, text service or 3G.

I'm using the B&B computer to log on.

The number here is 207-853-2955.

I'll be here the rest of the day and night. I'll be getting up at 03:00 and at Bat City Garage at 05:00 to start the ride.

Crash...excuse my long distance ignorance but whats BBG and SSG?

BBG is Bun Burner Gold - 1500 miles in 24 hours or less (I did 1590 in 23 hours)
SSG2000 is 2000 miles in 36 hours or less (I did 2111 in 33 hours)
BBG3000 is 3000 miles in 48 hours or less (Have not done one of these yet ... but the BBG was probably the hardest ride I have done so far, harder than the SSG2000 I did, pushing that double would really be tough)

Looks like a gas stop/detour.

IBA takes the shortest route unless you can prove your route.  I personally would have taken the 20 less miles hit and gone the faster route.  Although, they may accept her SPOT for verification and then she gets the miles.  We will need to ask her strategy.

And ... if we have to explain it, you wouldn't understand.  :neener:  But don't ask, because I honestly don't know why I do it either, I just keep doin' it anyway.

Way to go!

Back in '71 I taught a great woman how to ride with my '68 Bonneville.
She later used that knowledge to borrow a small Honda to ride from Phnom Penh to Singapore.
Put a woman on a motorcycle and she will do great things.

I texted her and was going to intercept east of Couer d Alene ID....badly misjudged her ground speed and saw she got by me but I managed to run her down at the Mobil station at the 272 exit. She was alert and rested....got 6 hours of shuteye last night. This was between 12:20 and it was 13:20 when I left her. She just hit Ellensburg. She's got til 5:30ish tomorrow AM to reach the coast.

I don't know how much delay there is in posting the SPOT info, but she seems to be at the Mass Pike/495 intersection. I would assume the plan is to head northeast on 495 to meet up with 95.

Of course, when I last rode those roads, there was no 495.

And weekend traffic along the coast can be heavy. The stretch of Rte.1 after she gets off 95 is what I'm thinking of.

Yes, she's on 495 almost to Lowell Mass.

Today I'm going thru pics and data.

Thanks to all who followed and supported my effort.

It was the hardest ride I've ever done and I didn't realize how hard until the day AFTER I was off the clock. With all the adrenaline gone there was almost nothing left to keep me upright.

I felt like I was hung over with no desire but for more sleep and no reserve to engage in any activity.

The ride from Eastport to Boston was the hardest and the next day home was better but not great. I stopped often to rest and twice for blown fuse issues that need sorting out.

Today I feel normal so I'll be replying to emails and PM's, working thru my pictures and cleaning the bike. I've already started a list of things that need to be addressed, repaired, modified or changed.

I'll also be going thru pics and compiling the data for the IBA Certs.

On a side note, I don't believe I could do another LD ride until I have my C6-C7 fused. I've put it off for several years now and as high a tolerance of pain that I have, this ride may have put me over the edge.

For 70% of the ride I was in mild pain (scale 5 to 6)
20% almost pain free.
But for 10% I was in tearful, writhing agony.

The nerve compression is causing deep, searing, unrelenting upper back, left shoulder and left arm pain. By the end at Eastport my left arm felt twice as heavy as my right and on the way home I could barely use it to pilot the bike.

I need to have 3 major surgeries over the next 24 months so I don't know if I'll be ready to ride out to visit Duck in 2015.

I love me some Duck and will do whatever it takes to spend some more awesome time in his company.

I hope so though and that is the goal I'm setting for myself. I also need to continue to loose weight and get physically in better shape.

I think the issue with your pain factor begs to ask the question:

In hindsight, was it worth it?

Yes.

Pain does not in and of it's self kill, but allowing it to win would be something I could not live with.

On the ride, just wow. Hats off to you Gwen. Stoli is on me next time I see ya.

On the C5-C6. Sorry, long story.

I have compression there as well. When it first exposed itself 2 years ago I thought i had a blood clot in my left arm. My upper left shoulder was in extreme pain. Now if I had done something stupid and hurt myself I would get it. But this just manifested itself from no where. 3 nights no sleep and I could work, but was uncomfortable. I could ride and it did not seem bad doing that. But no where near coast to coast, TWICE!!!
Anyway, visit to the doc, X-rays ad exams and well there ya go. Compression on C5-C6. Great meds + 6 weeks of rehab made it go away, but I lost 40% strength in my left arm. More rehab and regular workouts, minimum 3X week and I am better than ever now.
 Also, new pillow worked wonders.
My wife buys all that chit from the county fair. The " My Pillow " sales guy was there and well, she's easy. What can i say?
I used to wake up with a stiff neck, part of the compression fun, every 3 maybe 4 months. Almost debilitating and could not look left. Since getting the pillow, nada. No pain, no stiff necks.
I am currently at 5'9" and 180#  Doc wants me a 172 so I'm working towards that. I started at 205#.

I walk a lot and work out. Easy for me as we have regular classes at work, so  go.

Recently they had a cross fit challenge. $2 sign up. Winner in each class takes the $ for that location.

I am 53, going on 54 in October. The fitness trainer, yes we have paid trainers, challenged me and said the 50 up age class routine was too easy. He moved me to the 35-49 age class.
You think you are in shape? Try this. 6 simple exercises, 10 reps each. Do all 6 in series, then repeat for a total of 3 times.

#1 Push ups. Chest to floor, extension till just short of elbow lock out.
#2 Sit ups.  Knees bent, shoulders must clear knees.
#3 Line jump. Tape line on the floor, stand on the left side. Jump with both feet over the line to the right, then rapidly back to the left. That's one rep.
#4 Bell Squat. Feet shoulder width apart. Hold 35# dumbbell in front of chest. Do a full squat, thighs parallel to floor, then up to standing.
#5 Burpee:  From standing position, squat down and put hands on the floor just out side your feet. Thrust legs straight back, then bring them back under you and stand
                    up. That's one.
#6 Reverse lunge: Standing with #15 pound weight in each hand, step back with right leg and bend knee until just off the floor, then push back to standing position,
do ten each leg. That's ten right & ten left.

Repeat the above series for a total of three times.

I posted a 5:55 Beat most of the kids younger than me. Only 20 seconds slower than our local iron man competitor. But he goes for miles & miles.
I swear I saw stars and I could not breath right for a day, but i did it.

So Gwen. If you can ignore that pain riding coast to coast to coast OMG!!! You can lose a little weight AND get stronger AND live better too!

  Need help?

PM me or use my work email, you got it. I'll send you the simple 30 minute work outs we do. Minimal weights, body weight and some stretchy bands and all you really need.

I am so proud to know you.

 Jumpin Jimmy B.
