At some point in its history my '88 K75 was dropped, more than once, and the black valve cover and right side crank cover have the scrapes ground into the metal as a record of the events. When looking for a replacement, are the covers the same for all MYs of the K75, or were there some changes at some point in the run that limit the years I should be looking for?
I also considered cleaning up the damaged areas and attempting to build up them up with J-B Weld, file them to shape and paint them to match. Worst case scenario: the final result looks about as bad as it does now.

Did you ever try the JB Weld/File to finish approach? How'd it work? I have a similar "mark of character" on mine.

You could always check flea-bay or with some on-line breakers.
3 valve covers on the bay now for less than $30.
