Title: Hall Effect Element?
Post by: K75Slark on June 14, 2013, 10:19:26 AM
I've officially lost my mind. Somewhere on here (or iBMW) I read that you can purchase a new Hall Effect Element and rivet it on the mounting plate, thus saving yourself a considerable chunk of change by reusing the wiring and all the other expensive bits of German metal, but now I can't find it. Could someone help?

Thanks!

I've remembered reading that also, and like you I don't remember where......... :yow

Ok, I think I found something that my help.
"Snowbum" aka R. Fleischer wrote and linked some information. It is mostly Airhead but there is some information that also applied to the K's.

and

Read the articles and see if it is what you are looking for. There is information about the Honeywell part# and some vendors for purchase.
Can't say how current the information is, but I would most definitely trust the accuracy Bob's information.

That is correct.

Honeywell discontinued making the model HES used in the K's and R1100-1150's.  There is a Chinese replacement available.  It appears the issue isn't with the unit, rather it is the wiring that fails and some insulated shielding may result in longer life of the unit.  Temperature appears to be the killer in the sense that the operating temperature must be near the upper limits of the temp range.

Good Info for DIY rebuild of the HES

Thanks everyone!

It seems the 2AV54 is a rare part these days, it seems the cheapest source is from these guys in Munich: http://www.hallsensors.de/Hall-Vane.htm, (http://www.hallsensors.de/Hall-Vane.htm,) if you're willing to go the Chinese route.

I suppose the best way to check the wire insulation inside of the loom is to slice it open and have a look. I'll post some pictures later today with my findings.

Now where to find ten feet of high temp silicon insulated wire...

Inge, I'm cheap! It seems they're cheaper from Germany than these guys in the states...

Unless we wanted to do a group buy for us BMW weirdos.

So, I sliced open the insulation around the loom of wires coming from the HES plate and this is what I found:

Weird as hell, right? I suppose someone upgraded the cabling at some point in the past or our K's have better cabling than the R's? That would make my day!  :mbird

I need to build the 12v LED tester to get the bottom of my HES elements. Grumble.

Could it be the coils? Somewhere I read that 10k Ohms is the correct high voltage resistance. Anyone care to chime in?

Thanks for the help in diagnosing my brick, hopefully I'll be able to return the favor some day soon.

That is shielding for electrical noise. In the first link, that starts at the greyed out portion.

I'll take a look for some alternate options. They are pretty standard components. [/size]

I found someone with about 60 sets of HES's and wiring sets that hold up better.  IF there is interest, I'll talk with him and see what kind of $ he wants for sensors and wire sets

That would be a great deal. Let us know what you find out!

Source for HES =:  Tom Wade

He currently NOT repairing the HES.

However, he says he still has a limited number of wire sets available, and a large number of the HES transistor sets.  (60+)

I've purchased HES from Tom before.  He's very helpful.  Having purchased from him in the past, I would not bother looking anywhere else.  It's prolly the name.  :bmwsmile
