Title: Can you fix/adjust the latches on the BMW side cases?
Post by: mdaniels on June 11, 2013, 10:52:40 AM
The latches on the left case of my newly acquired K75s have been pretty loose and today they both popped open on my way to work and I lost my rain gear and a nice pair of gloves.  :bang-head: Ironically, I was just thinking on my ride in that I should get a luggage strap or bungie cord to put around it until I could get the latches fixed...

Is there any hope in adjusting the latches so they're tighter and don't pop open on their own, or is best to just remove the latches and do a DIY fix like this: http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=2317.msg12715#msg12715 (http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=2317.msg12715#msg12715)

I believe my cases are the first generation case which uses the small luggage style key.

Thanks.

Do you ride with at least one latch locked?

One option for tightening up the cases is to replace the foam seal (http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=928.msg20351#msg20351) around the case rim. As an added bonus, they might become waterproof-ier.

I didn't get keys with it when I bought the bike, so they remain unlocked. When I got the bike, one of the latches was locked and the previous owner claimed he didn't have the keys, so I had to have a lock smith open it for me.

I'll try the foam seal, but I think new latches may be in order.

A few of the old keys is still around at some dealers, also shows up at ebay now and then.
Your key # you find inside the latch.

If you open the latch on the side of the open lever you will see a 3 digit number , make a note of it.
then contact.    http://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Shop/Parts.php?T=2&NU=10&M=40 (http://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Shop/Parts.php?T=2&NU=10&M=40)
they can see if they have a matching key for the number.
I did this and was lucky in that they had a key .
So I can lock/ unlock all 6 locks with the one key.

sometimes the latch can be opened with just any other key.  Just try the key you already have and see.  If not, There is a DIY somewhere to grind down the dowel inside the cylinder to rekey the locks.

I believe his bags are the ones that use a very simply key such as you would find on a briefcase or cheap luggage.  Rekeying like you are suggesting is for the later style bag locks.

mine are the original flat style and pretty much pot metal junk.  when they got really loose I repositioned the hook side with my trusty pop rivet gun to tighten them up.  I never lock the suckers, too much of a pita.  Never had them both pop open, must be lucky
