Since my 1990 K75 has almost 45k on it, I figure its time for a clutch spline lube. I mentioned this to my local dealer. He said that he would just wait until I hit 90k - 100k and just replace the clutch and input shaft. He said that the lube would not really extend the shaft life. I am not experiencing any shifting problems, but I think I will lube anyway. Any thoughts?

My first thought is that your dealer is banking bux for the future. IMO, there's absolutely no reason that an input shaft should be required at 100k.
On my '90 K75RT I did replace the clutch at about 95k. There was nothing "wrong" with it (or the input shaft), I just did it as a preventative exercise. You should really not need a new clutch plate then either, unless, like me, it just makes you feel better. Or, for some reason, you're really hard on them.
I would, at the first sign of difficult downshifting, grease the input splines. Unless, you'll feel better knowing they've been recently lubed, then go ahead and lube them.
Just my two cents,
Tom

Thanks, Johnny and motodude. My thoughts too!

In 23 years, your bike travelled 45k miles. Is it going to be another 23 years till it hits 90k miles? I agree with Johnny, but may be your dealer was trying to tell you not to worry about it?

he says do not worry so when it breaks he can get in your wallet again :hehehe

Hi cy7878, the first two owners put on 28000 miles. I have put on about 17000 miles since I bought it little over a year ago. I think my dealer just believes that a lube will not extend the life of the splines. He sees them fail around the 90k mark. Could be because they don't get lubed! I am going to do the lube in the next couple weeks.

In that case I would agree that you need to get the old lube off and apply new lube to extend the life of the shafts. I would do them soon like you have planned.
