Title: K-bike Down!
Post by: Bob T on May 20, 2013, 11:39:55 AM
Well it finally happened...first time in over 20 years.  I crashed the K-bike.
Second day of a four day Wisconsin trip with friends.
Riding two up with the wife on board, I turned in too early, didn't give it enough input to correct and went wide.  Definitely pilot error.
Once we caught the gravel on the shoulder, it was too late.  Rode the ditch for about 100ft, then fell and slid for about 50ft.
Wife has a minor fracture of the left ankle, badly sprained right ankle.  I have a minor fracture of my left thumb.  We both are covered in bruises, as the ditch was full of large rocks.
We consider ourselves lucky and were very glad we wear full gear.
With the help of our friends, some tape and zip ties, we manged to make the bike ridable enough to get to our motel and then home.
Just waiting on the call back from our insurance agent.
Before pic...taken that morning.

You just described the wreck I had on my boxer many years ago. Glad to hear that your injuries are not that bad. Any plans to fix the bike?

Any plans to fix the bike?

Depends on what my insurance agency does.  I have full coverage, but I suspect repair cost will result in a total.

i betts they total it... i betts you could ask for buy back 1st refusal... i know a guy who did about that to a k1200s and he bought it back for $600... said his agent said that was the number that they would take just not to have to mess with it...

he fixt it for a few grand and was a few grand ahead butts is stuck with salvage title... other option if thats the way it goes is to part it out... i would take the wheels...

one thing... when the bug gotts damaged by at flatbed driver and insurance refused to pay... said it was a salvage title... which it was... i followed the advice of the motoboxer poster here turkus... when the state insurance commissioner was brought into the conversation they issued a check straight away...

so... if you are gonna ride on a salvage title its best to get in letter form from your agent that you have coverage for the salvage moto... and they are aware its a salvage moto...

other than that... getts your body ready and your brain ready to ride and ride and ride...

Johnny...I bets you're correct.  They want an estimate from a BMW dealer...what do you think those numbers will be... :yow

Buy back would be a nice option, since I hope to get another K1100RS...keep the spares I want and part out the rest.

Salvage titles are a pain in Illinois.

Yeah, in IL with a salvage title your only options are to swap frames or part out.

Feel like a jerk, forgot the most important thing! You both are mostly ok. Here's to a speedy recovery.

Well Allstate is sending someone to my house to look at the bike in a day or two...

The big question will be do I stay with a K11 or go for something else... :dunno

Glad it wasn't any worse.

Don't give up on it - find a cheapo and transfer parts!

I just hate to see lovely bikes laying in ditches! On the plus side, you two are not so banged up.  I hope you recover quickly.
The question on everyone's mind (but they are too polite to ask) is this: is your wife willing to ride pillion every again? :swear:

According to her, yes... :2thumbup:
She already is asking when we can go out again....Guess I'll need to dust off the old GS1100E...

A pic one of my friends took of us trying to mount a rear peg on the front mount so I could ride the bike back.  The front peg was snapped off.
