Title: Think the ABSII is done.
Post by: Grim on May 04, 2013, 12:09:19 PM
Pretty sad actually. One of the BIG points of me getting the bike was the ABS.

I have read tons of posts on working on it, done multiple resets. Adjusted the sensors. Tested them as best as I can to verify them good. I just cant get it to function. I Reset it and as soon as I start rolling I get the alternating lights.

The local dealer is completely worthless. They claim they don't have the diagnostic tool that works on this bike. The one guy that acted like he knew anything didn't even know about jumping the plug to ground.  I may well still make a LED code reader (since it supposedly will also work for the Motronic) just to see what code its throwing.

As I dug into this I found some of the power wiring unplugged for the modulator beside the battery.  All the protective tape on the ABS Harness to the brain was peeled off. On closer inspection all the brown wires in the harness got hot enough to melt the insulation and fused to the adjacent wires.  It appears somehow something was shorted or got the power onto the grounds for he ABS. Without a parts bike to scavenge parts from its just looking cost prohibitive at this point to try to fix. I dont know what exactly is fried and it may just be everything is fried after finding the damage on the harness. :dunno

I dont think I'm going to the trouble to remove the harness. I'll just tape it up under the tank to get it out of the way.  I do want to get the modulator and brain out. I'll find/make and bin to replace it where I can get some extra storage in its place or it will let me use a cheaper bigger battery in the future.

Read posts about others removing the ABS. Mostly ABS I.  After looking things over I think what I will do is take the hard lines out that run the the modulator. In the rear I will hopefully just re-bend the line coming out of the master and re-flare to make the connection back to flex line. On the front I need to do a bit more investigation but I believe there is a junction block up by the head tube. Hope to again just make a loop back to the line going to the front flex.  That will leave the stock flex lines in place and be a cheap way to get the modulator and plumbing out.
I have a local place that does high pressure lines and if I cant do the double flare I think it needs I'm pretty sure they can.  They have helped me with brake plumbing on other vehicles in the past and usually can knock out simple stuff while you wait. They have several locations. http://www.royalbrassandhose.com/location.html (http://www.royalbrassandhose.com/location.html)

I'm not sure when I will get to this but I will take pictures and post how I did it for anybody that find themselves in a similar place in the future.

Let me know any pitfalls I may not have touched on.

Messed with it today. Harness is hosed. One of the main ground pins is melted. See attached picture.

My assumption is the ECM is cooked as well. Left it unplugged. Unplugged the modulator. Pulled the blue relay to kill the abs light.
