Title: What's in your Handlebars? Reducing Vib's
Post by: TimTyler on May 03, 2013, 11:27:17 AM
Wondering what wisdom fellow brickers might have for reducing handlebar vibrations on a well-tuned K bike with ProGrip 699's.

I've read suggestions for filling the bars with beach sand, lead shot, nuts and bolts, silicone caulking, and of course bar end weights.

My bike's bars do not buzz much, but a little vibration reduction wouldn't hurt.

I have used Vibranators on an R100RS.  They made a modest improvement.  On the K100RS I don't feel the need to do anything at all, as the vibes are well within my comfort range.

Bar Snake?

Lead weights in shot form. Y'know, like the ones with which you fill shotgun shells. Lower that eyebrow, now.

I bought a bag at a local sporting goods store. Tilted my bike's handlebars via turning to the stop and filled 'er up, both sides in the same manner. I got it pretty full, went for a cupla days riding then did the procedure again to account for shift/settling of the shot.

Noticeably subdued and much more pleasant to ride, esp. on long hauls.

Thanks me later  :bmwsmile

I put a bar snake in my 91 K100LT about 20 years ago.  I don't know if they are still available.

whem i send my shock in for a nitrogen recharge... also send my handlebars in for a nitrogen recharge too...

nothing as smooth as a fresh nitrogen charge in the suspension and handlbars...

I'm a little bit surprised you would need this on a 4cyl bike?
I haven't ridden a brick at all yet, but by the look if it it really doesn't look like a machine that has any vibration issues.

I have a Yamaha XJ550 4cyl, half the cc but no vibration at all, A Ducati 900SSie Twin cyl some tiny vibrations but not an issue.
And then I have a Suzuki DR650RE thumper, that thing vibrates like a friggin mini-excevator!

I tried sugar in the handlebar so I'd always have a supply at hand for cafe cubano, then I switched to maple syrup because it's supposed to be healthier. The drawback with both the materials was the distraction caused by wrangling the ants to keep an equal population on both sides for balance.

Tim's bike is the three cylinder model.  And, generally speaking they're smoother than the four cylinder models that tend to be "buzzy".

I don't have any experience with bar weights. But, in my experience, if the vibes are increasing, you could improve that by a TB sync.

Back when the family business was going we had a John Deere 4300 compact utility with a loader and backhoe...that 3 cyl Yanmar was vibey. I loved when we had an excuse to rent a Bobcat 334 mini excavator with a 4 cyl Kubota...that was Cadillac-smooth and quiet (I actually like Buicks more but people tend to get confused when I reference Buick luxury)

Tim my K75 is smooth as, no vibes, my mates 75s is the same, maybe there is a problem elsewhere causing the vibration. We have really nasty snakes in OZ so would not be putting one in or on the handle bars, but maybe in the tragkorbs for security.
Regards Martin

Smooth is relative...my K75 has some vibration and for a while I thought there was an issue but then I borrowed an R1100RT and decided my K75 was definitely smoother

Crazy smooth is relative the smoothest bike I've ever had was a RT450 Ducati single. But only when the engine was off. :hehehe
