Title: K75 jumps out of 2nd gear
Post by: BriSco on April 17, 2013, 04:44:35 PM
New to this site and have a question.

New to K bikes, not new to BMW.
Considering buying a K75 for my son.

One that I'm considering, 1989 with 18,000 miles has a problem in that it regularly has jumped out of second gear.

What can I expect?

I'm capable of removing and disassembling transmission. (I've done it on my R1150RT)

Is it jumping from 2nd to Neutral? Or is the gear indicator blank, as though the tranny is in no-gear land?

Could be a bent shift fork or a bad drum.  Often you can find a used tranny cheaper than the parts to fix.

I'm not too sure how familiar you are with this transmission (assuming fairly if you are ready to take it apart) or if you have had a chance to ride it, but the bike can be funny in that it sometimes appears to jump out of second gear when it wasn't really put fully into second gear (I keep pressure on it until the clutch is fully out). But if the problem is consistent, I'd go with what Chaos said.

I haven't rode the bike yet. I've only talked to the gentleman who inherited it from his father.
He says that it jumps to neutral. Didn't ask about the gear indicator.

He did say that it happened very frequently. He says he just skips second and it has been fine in all other gears.
He is in the military and hasn't had the money or time to investigate further.

I plan to look closely and hopefully ride the bike Saturday.
I'm just trying to do a bit of pre-work before I travel an hour to see the bike.

I think the asking price of $2000 for the bike is fair given even given the trans issues, if the remainder of the bike checks out.
Anyone know where I might find a good used transmission???

greetings brisco...

welcome to motobrick.com...

gotts to ride it yourself and see what its really doing... i find it suspicious that a 18k motobrick would have trans issues... im thinking the dude cant punch it into 2nd with authority or its not a 18k motobrick...
