Title: Factory additional headlamp kerfuffle
Post by: duke on April 16, 2013, 10:22:54 PM
I have a new to me ’87 K75T with the factory “additional headlamps” that are wired into the fog light rocker switch.
When I push the top of the switch in, the right additional light comes on whenever the high beams are on and both are off with low beams;
when the rocker is in the center position, the same thing.
When the bottom of the rocker is pushed in, the left comes on with the low beams and both are off with high beams.
They are never both on at the same time.
Seems a little strange to have only one of these on at a time.
Is this normal? Should I change it to have both on together and if so, how would I do that?
Obviously electricity is above my pay grade. :dunno2:

greetings duke...

welcome to motobrick.com...

this is what im thinking... maine... the previous owner most likely wore heated gear... the aux lights suck some juice...

im thinking he wired them up on a 3 way switch so he could run 1 aux light with low beam and 1 aux light with high beam... butts not both aux lights simultaneously...

thats what im thinking... you could replace the oem alternator with a 50a (http://www.kbikeparts.com/50a_alt/50a_alt.htm) and you could run heated gear and both aux lights...

Thanks for the thoughts, you could be on to something. Out of curiosity I'll see if I can tell if I have the original alternator.

In the mean time I'd like to figure out how to wire them to come on together.

I also have a set of PIAA lights with their own relay.

At one time BMW used to supply bikes to the European market with a fog lamp in one side of the headlight, which would come on with low beam, and a spot (driving) light on the other which comes on with main beam/ I bought my first new BMW that was like that in 1977, it was a R75/7.

Additional headlamps?

They would not happen to be the square ones that sit below the headlight, would they? If so, you have a rare beast. How about some pictures?

Not really square but rectangular. See attached photo.

That is totes AWESOME. Can you scrounge around for a part number on those? And maybe post a close-up from a bit more to the side to show how the mounts work?

Bingo. Good job!  You get the Motobrick Esoteric Trivia  award.
After further investigation (like turning the lights on against the garage door), each one does indeed have a different beam pattern.

Interesting, because as I understand it the K75T was an American only, 2 year run ('86 & '87?), touring version, which I assumed came with the hard cases, top case and these additional headlamps. I guess they just stuck these on and figured we'd like 'em.

So I guess I'll ride European style and see how I like it. Although I'm already getting tired of people telling me I have a light out.

I'm NOT wearing a beret though.

According to my copy of:
BMW Motorrad-und Fahrerausstattung '86
(BMW motorcycle and rider's equipment)

In case you can't read it the part number is: 63172300117

Thanks! Fascinating. I like the mounting scheme, though it looks like the parts are no longer available. But perhaps something similar could be fabricated.

Here's Bob's BMW's page for the set, which they list as applicable to the Euro K100: http://store.bobsbmw.com/microfiche/BrowseParts.aspx?q=63172300117&MBike=51746 (http://store.bobsbmw.com/microfiche/BrowseParts.aspx?q=63172300117&MBike=51746)

I have a pair of the brackets, with some PIAA's mounted to them.

Not long ago I saw a complete set (lights, brackets, switch), never installed, on E-Bay.

They look really eighties.

I was about to say the same.  Perhaps those are the ones I am thinking of too, but I know I saw a new set for sale somewhere within the past month or so.  I didn't mention it here, as I've never been a fan of them.
