My 1994 k1100rs, 31k on the clock is a pig to start if its been left, even overnight especially in the cold, it always catches eventually but just doesn't fire quickly and certainly much longer than it should be, the fuel pump works I keep the 'choke' at the halfway point, battery is always fully charged, I leave the throttle alone as always but it's just a pig to fire up. Any ideas?
-
In cold weather, push the "choke" all the way to the stop. When the engine fires, let the "choke" stay on the halfway point.
What's the engine idle speed when its warmed up?
-
It runs just at 1000 rpm, it runs very sweet it's just a bit of a pig to start
-
I had similar problems starting below freezing. I checked valve clearances and found 3 to be tight beyond spec. Tight valves are a suspect for any engine with hard start ups, too. All you need is a 10mm socket, needle nose pliers, a set of feeler gauges, a little rtv sealant and about an hour!

In my defense I bought it 18 months ago with 7k miles on it!! Anyway someone suggested flicking kill switch a few times before starting in case the filter is a bit dirty, so I tried this and its started fine the last 2 days in temps of around zero so hopefully I'll change the filter and it'll be fine. Hopefully.

Wow,....... I'd be a Pig to start around zero degrees TOO !!!
-
That would be centigrade in the UK, or 32F. That's near the temps we're having in Toronto this time of year (-3C this AM). Nice riding weather. Went for a 50km(30 miles) ride north to my sister's place for Easter dinner on Sunday at about 8C(46F). Wasn't cold even at 135kph(84mph).

How old is the battery? Even if it's reading as fully charged, it might not be able to deliver the full current required for a good clean start.
My sketchy winter starting cleared up last year when I replaced the battery.
