Title: Emergency spare parts kit
Post by: TIV on March 12, 2013, 07:56:03 PM
In the forty years I have been riding motorcycles, I have never had to leave my bike behind because of a breakdown, "knock on wood". I intend to keep it that way as long as I can. The reason for this is probably combination of luck, preventive maintenance, regular service, and routine checks. :dunno2:

The K bikes are dead reliable. They can however, and will, brake down at some point like any other vehicle. There is no source for spare parts in Iceland for the old K's. I have to order everything from abroad. I sometimes go on long trips to remote places, and a breakdown, that can not be repaired at the roadside, would be expensive and ruin my trip of course. :loco:

When I travel i always bring tools, spark plugs, spare bulbs, tire repair kit, compressed air cans and clutch cable. If something breaks down that calls for a specialized component, I´m stuck. Since I am living in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, it would be nice to have sort of emergency kit, with the most critical special components needed for a roadside repair.  :laugh

I would like to ask you, fellow brickheads, to help me to make up a list of critical components. Then I could build up my own emergency kit. Aside from electrics, components that come to mind are the fuel pump and the fuel pressure regulator. Injectors maybe? All opinions and advice on this matter would be highly appreciated.  :hmm:

I carry too many tools (almost enough to do anything), fuses, zip ties, spark plugs, oil filter wrench, flat tire stuff, flint, 12v air pump, and a space blanket. You can pretty much bet that whatever spare parts you bring, you won't need.  :tongue Probably smart to have clutch and throttle cable spares tucked away too.

I bring a Spot GPS alerter thingy on long trips now too, which will send canned emergency emails from anywhere it finds a satellite. A membership to a motorcycle-friendly tow service would be nice, but perhaps they wouldn't help you on the barren lunar scapes of Volcanoville, Iceland.

I carry too many tools.

Prior to the 4k mile trip I took last summer I did pretty much a complete service, minus fuel filter and input spline lube.  In the middle of the NV desert, the engine started to stumble.  We did make it to Ely.  We stopped at a gas station and replaced the filter prior to refilling the tank.  My point is that, knowledge of what maintenance has been done (and not done) and what may go wrong (I'd noticed some crud in the bottom of the tank) should provide some idea of what parts to bring.

These days, I don't really see needing spark-plugs.  In the '60s yeah, now, not so much.

Cables are probably a good idea, especially if the ones you have are old.  It is also a good idea to route the new cables along side the old ones so it is much easier to replace them on the road.

I went to the MOA National in Missoula several years ago.  One of the guys in the group was riding a Honda 750 Nighthawk.  On his way up Lolo Pass, his throttle cable broke.  He tied a stick to the end of the cable and rode the rest of the trip with his left hand on the grip and his right hand holding that stick.

Tire plugging kits are a good idea too.

Not specifically a tool, but a first-aid kit isn't a bad idea either.

But then a lot of folks ride without any of that stuff,
Tom
