Title: Happens Every Time
Post by: BexarWolf on February 21, 2013, 11:20:08 AM
So, today I finally got a chance to sync the throttle bodies on my K1100rs. It was quick and simple after I figured out how to get all the body parts off so I could get to the throttle bodies.  :hmm:

So, throttles are synched nicely at idle

But after I pulled the belly pan off to get to everything else, I find this:

Now, I don't mind working on my own bike. I really don't. But this just happens every time I try to do anything to any of the bikes I've owned. I have a new Odyssey PC680 coming this weekend. I wonder what I'll find under the seat when I get there to install it.  :dunno

It's a little tight but you can sync the TBs on a K11RS just by taking off the left knee panel.

The PC680 will fit but you'll probably want to put something over the positive terminal to make sure it doesn't short to the bracket above.  I use a 1/8" thick piece of rubber. See Reply #2 in this thread:

Yeah, I planned on putting some rubber mat material across the top to help insulate it from those issues. Now my bike sits in the garage half naked waiting for me to figure out what direction I want to go with the oil seepage. It's not horrendous or anything. I haven't been going through an abnormal amount of oil. I just know the longer I wait, the worse it'll get and I'll end up not having a bike to ride when the weather gets nicer because I'll be jacking with an oil leak. Grrrrrrr.

That looks like years of accumulation.... Clean it up and watch what happens, you may be able to go a long time without having to make any repairs.

I sure hope it's years of accumulation. I'm going to scrub it down over the next few days (after I get the battery installed) and see where that leads me. I'll probably leave the belly pan off for a while and see what I can see.

Leave the belly pan on.  It's there to catch the oil so you don't have to fix it.  :laugh

Yeah and if it rattles, turn up the radio.

Speaking of Radios and Belly Pans,...

How did the Belly Pan look ?? Did any oil drip into/onto it? I am betting it did not. If it did drip, that would tell me more recent, faster developing leak. What you have, agreeably seems old slow seepage.

The oil track was interesting in that it seemed to go off to the right. It even went off of the picture.

I'll get a shot of the belly pan and post it in the next day or two. I'm on a compressed shift at work and if I'm not working, I'm sleeping until Tuesday morning.

My 88 k75 started leaking exactly like this, all the bolts around there were tight as the should of been.
Is it time to replace the gasket? Anyone else had this leak?

on mine the oil pressure sending unit leaked.  Pull the rubber cap off and see if it has oil on the inside.

Ok, finally got a chance to get my camera out and get a pic of the inside of the belly pan. This doesn't bode well because I had it off back in September for some maintenance stuff and hosed it down.

So, which one of these might be the oil sending unit so I can pull it off and look for oil inside? I'm going to scrub the front of the engine within the next few days and leave the belly pan off so I can look for leaks when I park.  :dunno

No way to tell with that much oil around.  Clean the area up as well as you can. Ride it a hundred miles. Check again.

You don't really need to have the belly pan installed so it might just be easiest to leave it off for a while and check down there after every ride.

It also may be that the seal in your water/oil pump is going.  Things to look for:

- A layer of oil in the coolant reservoir.

- Frothing in the oil sight glass window immediately after a ride.

If its like the car sending units, you will find dripping oil between the center insulator and the metal jacket...but it only happens with engine running.Clean off the area, pull back the rubber boot and wipe the switch.Start the engine and if the switch has a leak,it should start leaking right away.
Good luck.

Shit mate, I hope it is something stupid like a o-ring on the oil sending unit.
Good luck on an easy fix!

If I can ever get an hour to myself, I'll get all that mess cleaned off. Knowing my luck, I'll pull on something to check the oil sending unit and end up pulling something loose that's hanging on by a thread.  :dunno

I don't want to use a pressure washer like the car wash but I can't imagine how many bottles of Simple Green and rags I'm going to go through trying to clean enough of that crud off to see a weep or seep of oil.

I like the pressure washers at the car washing places.
They are not as harsh as the gas powered ones.
The businesses have oil separators, at least the ones here in Seattle do.
The "engine degreaser" option does a reasonable job attacking the grease and is set up to be used with the "high pressure rinse" option.
I know, you didn't ask my opinion, but there it is.

Unless you know what you're doing it is not a good idea to pressure wash K bikes.  You need to avoid pressure washing the gear position indicator switch and the breather caps on the trans and final drive.

My intent is to just degrease the front of the engine. The rest of the bike is still purty. I'd rather not pressure wash around the area of the oil sending unit just to be safe so I plan on getting some good engine degreaser, warm up the bike, foam up the greasy area and house it off while using a decent, stiff brush.

It's obvious the leak is while the bike is running or hot because there's been no dripping since I pulled the belly pan off. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or bad but it's something.

A trick I heard from somewhere is to spray the area with antiperspirant.  The suspended powder will coat the area and make a leak really easy to see.  It washes right off.

I'll definitely have to give that a try once I get the gook washed off. Thanks!  :2thumbup:

Should you be the type that looks for excuses to buy tools, I picked up this kit a few years ago for ~$65:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NPGXR6/ref=ox_ya_os_product (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NPGXR6/ref=ox_ya_os_product)

There are most definitely cheaper options of this type as well.  I just happened to need a comprehensive kit like this for a car with a delightful trifecta of coolant, oil and fuel leaks, plus it can do AC if needed eventually.

GUNK Heavy Duty Gel Engine Degreaser

What he said.  I use Simple Green for most jobs also, but any serious build up gets at least one round of Gunk gel.  Especially when dealing with all those nooks and crannies.
