Title: K1100lt burning oil.
Post by: shermanawacs on February 06, 2013, 03:55:06 AM
My K1100lt with 130.000 km on the clock burns a bit too much oil. When I accelerate hard it sends out a black'ish cloud of smoke . It burns up to half a litre in 500 km when ridden hard.
At more moderate driving style it takes about 1500 km to burn the half litre. Any suggestions??

Doesn't sound too out of line to me for oil consumption.
you will find posted around on many forums that the oil consumption can be up to 1qt per 1000 miles and it is considered normal.

I also find that if I'm riding hard my oil consumption also increases, compared to easier riding style.

In the K1100 service manual the maximum permissible oil consumption is 0.15 l/100km or 1,875 miles/gal. (Which is crazy IMO.)

If it's smoking under heavy acceleration then you might want to compression test it to see if the rings are worn.

Wouldn't hurt to check the valve clearances while you're at it,

My K75 is similar to that, more if ridden hard. I went through about 2 quarts on my ride last summer. 4000 miles, much of it at high speed, high load, and high temperature. Got about 100k miles on it. I may look into replacing the rings, as I think it burns a bit too much lately. I should do a leakdown test. I will be doing the clutch soon, so I will be most of the way in anyhow.

Seems like I dont have to worry too much about it, will consider it to be my next winter project. Tks for your comments.
