Title: tension band or cable tie on K1100 rear drive gaiter?
Post by: rbm on January 30, 2013, 04:26:36 PM
Hi,

Quick question -- what is currently recommended for cinching the large end of the gaiter that goes between the final drive and drive shaft housing  on a paralever?  I look at the online parts catalogue and it appears to be a metal band (P/N 33172335120).  I look up the corresponding part in Motobins' catalogue and they are selling a cable tie (P/N 54017).  I'd like to know if the cable tie is now the preferred fastener.  Thanks for the help.

I use the metal band that's been on the bike since day one. I would have thought a cable tie would be effective as an alternative and cheaper although I would still go for the band myself as its possibly better for a water tight seal.

Preferred by whom?

"Preferred by BMW" was my original thought, as sometimes BMW specified alternate/upgraded parts as bugs are worked out.  More likely, this is Motobins supplying what it can obtain through its suppliers.

It's not superceded in the parts catalog and the metal bands are still available from BMW.
