Title: ready to start
Post by: jeffhestand on January 18, 2013, 04:59:44 PM
hey fellas- in the fall i had my tranny quit me and since i have to get to the worm screw assy and the tranny i am going to pull the whole engine and do an overhaul while messing with the tranny. I seem to rememeber there is a write up on engine removal somewhere on here or on another site. Any direction will be appreciated. Also, I know i want to go thru the starter motor as i am having electrical gremlins as well . Is there anything else that i should pay keen attention to on a rebuild? Thanks Jeff 85 K100

JMHO but since the way the engine is mounted and is a structural component of the bike the best way is to take the bike apart and take the frame off. That's how I'd do it. I've wracked my brain to come up with something simpler since I want to swap engines on my K75 but I haven't come up with anything.
Personally I don't see the point in rebuilding a K bike engine since they're pretty bulletproof and last "forever" with regular oil changes. If you've got a high mile engine that's losing compression or something then I think you'd be better off time, $$$ and effort-wise finding a lower mile engine and just swapping it in. There's lots of 'em out there.
Just my .02....

What I really wanted to do was to get down to the frame level and brush paint my neglected rusty frame with por 15 silver. Not really rebuilding the engine but clean he starter motor, possibly remove the injectors and send them off for cleaning. And I have to fix some leaks on the bottom of the tank. Any suggestions on that ? The tranny is main thing though, to get to that grub screw and such. She is unrideable right now. Any ideas helpful. Jeff
