I see lots of posts on heated grips but not quite the same issue, according to my paperwork mine had been replaced not too long ago so it came with factory and they were replaced. worked great for several months, one night with completely soaking hands in a very heavy rain i decided to use them to partially combat the stinging cold, first full on, then like an idiot decided that with it being so wet, maybe the 'lower voltage' of the lower setting would be safer (have since read that only using the full setting is wiser) but on that lower setting they just went off, never to return, checked the fuse, no dice, all i can see is "pull the tank" which is daunting, i ride every day. anything i can check/try before doing that? if I have to pull the tank, is that not as big of a deal as I think it is? :k75s

Removing the gas tank (http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=535.0)
#1 fuse?
Drop me a line if you need to replace the intermediate HG harness.
-
fuse was the first thing I checked, but worth checking again just to be sure.
how will I know if i need to replace the harness? guessing if the fuse is ok thats my issue?
thanks,

Check the orange wire. That's the one that usually melts it's insulation off. It may just be that something has become disconnected.
-
hmm, yea betting melted orange wire is what it is, time for some wrenching and lernin'
thanks,

I'd bet on a broken wire at the back of the switch.
I've had more than one break at the solder joints on the backside of the dash pad switches.
That's at least easier to look for/repair than pulling the tank to begin with.
-
My bets are on wires broken at grip(s) or abraided inside the bar.
Be interesting to see if they start working after a couple of days drying out. :hmm:

the heavy rain that shorted it was months ago, so its plenty dry, could be at the switch, i should start there, even if it was a short it was that hard of a rain, it pooled up everywhere, but my luck, all the way under the tank.
thanks

With this and your op in mind my guesses are as follow:
1)Burnt orange wire
2)Fried switch
3)Wires to the grips have a short
and/or
4)The grips have a short and are dead
The switch and wires are easily checked with a multi-meter,.
Also you can tell if the orange wire is dead by checking for power at the switch(this might save you the hassle of removing the tank).
If your switch is not getting power then you know that the problem is between the orange wire connection and the fused power in the electrics box.
If it is getting power then the problem is either the wires in the bars or the grips themselves.
^Trying to be helpful here, not patronizing. When I don't know if someones wrenching experience is above, the same as or lower than mine I cover basic stuff until finding out that such is not needed.
Hope this helps,

If they still have the original factory switch then the first, easiest place to start is to pull the switch out. Not uncommon for the wires to become disconnected. I resolder all of mine usually.
-
many thanks, my wrenching experience is only with cages so i can learn but i'm a newb all the way on the brick
-
My grips don't work anymore. When you figure out the problem, please let me know.
BTW, How long should it take for the grips to heat up?
-
How fast?
Grips heat up pretty quickly. You should be able to feel heat in 5 min or less.
I've ridden bikes with the stock kit and noticed they are cmofy in 5 - 10 minutes.
The symtecs I installed are very warm in 10 min. I did not use the stock wiring harness.
-
Well, there is no question that mine are dead.
Now I have something to tinker with.
-
Fix em up!
I rode for over 30 years suffering and freezing in the cold. My hands only. Had the other gear to survive. Never again.
Man O' man! Using the Symtecs is just beyond awesome.
The K1100RS has the 50 AMP alternator. At highway speed the grips really crank out the heat.
Even through the gloves it is still HOT!!!
Anything above 35 degrees F needs the low setting.
25 to 35 F I have to alternate between HI - LO. I am too fooking dumb to build Drakes variable switch. I don't mind switching back and forth.
I have ridden in temps down to 5 degrees F. Sunny day, clear roads. Hands will get a chill, but it is not paralyzing or dangerous.

after many months of cold hands, I worked up the nerve to lift the tank, not as hard as I thought it would be, but alas, no problems down there (nice to know my crotch won't catch fire though) so I popped the switch and sure enough the rain had caused a short just hot enough to pop off one of the wires where it was soldered to the switch, naturally one of the kids broke my soldering iron tip so got to go repair that first before fixing this...and its summer so, yea. :musicboohoo:
